Okay, maybe Chuck Pratt doesn’t hate women in real life, but he sure seems to love tormenting them on the small screen on “The Young and the Restless”. Per capita, Y&R seems to have more crazy chicks than any other soap, perhaps than ALL other soaps combined. Avery Bailey Clark [Jessica Collins] is leaving the show and show runners are now having to rewrite her storyline.
Pratt had originally intended Avery to be found to have falsely accused her ex Joe Clark [Scott Elrod] of raping her which would be in direct conflict to her character. And this would, de facto, make crazy one of the sanest female characters on the show.
Pratt told Michael Fairman in a recent interview that “Sharon is much more interesting when she is crazy!” Pratt was speaking, of course, about Sharon Newman [Sharon Case]. Pratt says he’s writing this for the fans, but he’s outraging the fans. Maybe that’s his intent… Some of the comments on the Y&R forum boards on various boards call Pratt’s plots “insane writing” “bizarre bullsh*t stories” “they are writing so silly” “worst writing ever” and “very disappointed” are just a few of the remarks by unhappy fans.
You have to give credit to the network for bringing Chuck Pratt in though – Y&R viewership is up despite (or maybe because of) Pratt’s insane plots. Serial killers, plane crashes, doppelgangers and explosions are the least of it, along with Pratt’s every day infusion of lunacy into the psyches of females on the show.
But the question becomes, are viewers, despite the negative comments on Twitter and the forums, engaged and enjoying the roller coaster ride or is it more that they’re watching the blood seep out of a train wreck and they can’t tear their eyes away?
Pratt has admitted that he likes it better when Sharon is off her meds. We’ve recently seen Kelly Andrews [Cady McClain] go insane, tormenting and (possibly) raping Jack Abbott [Peter Bergman]. Poor Phyllis Summers [Gina Tognoni] was already unstable and then Pratt has her essentially being raped on the daily by a man who’s pretending to be her husband Jack. You can only imagine how off the rails Phyllis is going to be when this all breaks loose.

Nikki Newman [Melody Scott Thomas] is another that Pratt likes to torment saying he prefers her drunk. That means that, although Nikki is struggling to stay clean in rehab, we can expect Pratt to throw her bodily off the wagon again soon and right back into the bottom of a bottle. That’s just sad. Why can’t he write her to be both engaging and sober. Why must her character be boozing to be interesting to the head writer?
He’s also got Sage Warner [Kelly Sullivan] halfway to crazy town and she’s new to town. Sage has been acting bipolar (calm then crazy) then there’s this whole baby daddy thing and she’s been shrieking and carrying on. Admirable acting by Sullivan, but does every woman in Genoa City have to be unhinged.
We’re used to crazy ladies on the soaps – every show has to have one. General Hospital has Nina Clay [Michelle Stafford], The Bold & the Beautiful has Quinn Fuller [Rena Sofer] and Days of Our Lives has Kristen DiMera [Eileen Davidson] but, over in Genoa City, there seems to be something in the water (or, more likely, the water in the Y&R writer’s room) making the ladies nuts.
What do you think Y&R fans? Do you think there’s too much insanity in the ladies of GC? Or are you loving the chaos that Pratt is wreaking on the women of The Young and the Restless?

I have been watching Y&R since it started. I actually love Pratts writing! It is hilarious to take the actors out of their comfort zone. Before Pratt it was stable and so predictable. Now it is fun and cant wait for the next episode. Sorry to see Avery go..
I believe he must have a grudge agaInst women..for sure! And I for one am sick to death of it! Insulting and degrading to say the least! All the women are crazy or whores or whores-in-training…
