Whitney Way Thore from My Big Fat Fabulous Life infuriated TLC fans recently because she shared an advert for a course that she presumably didn’t do.
Tying it into her blurb about herself on social media this week didn’t convince critics. In fact, they felt that there was a disconnect between the reality of her audience and her privileged life.
What Was The Course She Promoted?
The course that the MBFFL star promoted came with the offer of a free consultation. In her Instagram video, the TLC star explained that she’s got “a career,” reminding followers about “filming” for My Big Fat Fabulous Life for “part of the year.” However, she also mentioned that she travels a lot. Yes, she does, and each season of the show, she’s seen flying somewhere on her perpetual man-hunt. And, that right there, stinks of privilege, critics agree.
“While I’m traveling, I can work remotely,” Whitney Way Thore said, as she casually brushed out her hair. So, it suited her to study a “writing course” from anywhere she felt like it. Can you spot the privilege? Firstly, she admitted that she works part-time. Secondly, she has lots of time to do whatever she wants, and finally, she can afford to travel to exotic locations.
Not Identifying With Her Audience Isn’t Good?
On Reddit, a TLC fan ranted about the advert, and opined, “She doesn’t take courses, she doesn’t work, she doesn’t plan to work, she wouldn’t dream of working.” Of course, most people don’t have the luxury of the MBFFL star’s lifestyle.

The OP continued by saying, “You’re telling your audience who I assume are looking to better their lives that you are SO PRIVILEGED that you can take classes while on one of your many vacations.” Slam-dunking Thore, they ended by writing, “…Essentially she’s telling her audience, do you wanna live and travel like me? Do this thing that I absolutely did not do. You are still gonna have to work a job, I won’t though.”
Unrelatable Whitney Flaunts Her Privilege
“She’s just babbling. She knows she’s not relatable. She cannot relate to a working person,” the OP stated. Did other My Big Fat Fabulous Life fans see it the same way? Or, did they feel the post seemed unfair to Whitney? Read on to find out more observations about privilege and work ethics.
In the discussion that followed, some reality TV fans noticed that Thore never said that she actually did the course herself. Here are a few other thoughts that were thrown around:
- .There’s nothing about the courses that made her travel possible and nothing she is doing that is related to these courses. It’s all so fake.
- Who wants to see this insufferable spoiled brat babble on endlessly about her oh-so-privileged life?
- Personally I have not been overseas in 40 years due to the cost and not having extra money … Whitney is so privileged and flaunts it.
