Prime Video green-lights Mike Flanagan reimagination of Stephen King's Carrie

The iconic showrunner, Mike Flanagan, famous for his horror productions, sees a TV series of Carrie greenlit for Prime Video.

Flanagan, famous for The Fall of the House of Usher, Midnight Mass, Doctor Sleep and many more, is the screenwriter, executive producer for the iconic Stephen King horror story, now becoming a TV series.

Moreover, he is set to direct select episodes of the show, while Trevor Macy also executive produces and the series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.

It was in the late fall of 2024 that the series quickly came together when Flanagan opened a writers’ room for the series.

Moreover, the eight-episode series has also been quietly casting. According to Deadline, the role of the title character, Carrie White, is played by newcomer Summer H. Howell (Hunter, Hunter), while Siena Agudong (Resident Evil) is to play Carrie’s nemesis, Sue Snell.

The plot of the new series is described as a reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White, who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. Following her father’s sudden death, Carrie finds herself contending with the challenges of attending high school, a bullying scandal, and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers.

Carrie’s story has ‘cultural relevance’

Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, said of the project:

Carrie is an iconic story that has withstood the test of time with continued cultural relevance. With Mike Flanagan at the helm and the accomplished team assembled including executive producer Trevor Macy this provocative series is sure to captivate our global customers.

Prime Video is planning TV series adaptations of iconic MGM movies

The reimagining of Stephen King’s Carrie is one of several MGM movie titles Prime Video has been grabbing for TV series adaptations since Amazon’s acquisition of MGM. Legally Blonde, Poltergeist, Tomb Raider and Barber Shop are among the titles.

King’s novel, Carrie, was first produced by Brian De Palma in 1975, with Sissy Spacek in the lead role of Carrie. Meanwhile, the movie saw a Carrie remake in 2013, with Chloë Grace Moretz in the leading role.

Stephen King fans, are you looking forward to Mike Flanagan’s reimagining of Carrie’s iconic story? With the showrunner’s history with hit horror series, it is almost guaranteed to be a hit for Prime Video.
