General Hospital spoilers and updates tease there seems to be a shocking connection between Port Charles and Pine Valley.
Is it possible there’s a storyline connection (other than the obvious) between Pine Valley’s Will Cortlandt and Port Charles’ Valentin Cassadine (both James Patrick Stuart)?
Valentin’s Fake Passport
Last week, General Hospital treated sharp-eyed fans to an amusing Easter egg when Valentin Cassadine’s (James Patrick Stuart) counterfeit passport bore the name Will Cortlandt. Meanwhile, Charlotte Cassadine (Scarlett Fernandez) was identified as Melanie Cortlandt.
This clever nod brought a smile to All My Children fans, who recalled James Patrick Stuart as the notorious Will from Pine Valley (Melanie was his sister, not his daughter.)
But could this be more than just a fleeting joke? Might it hint at an undisclosed storyline yet to be unveiled?
The Man He Used To Be
Valentin made his dramatic entrance into Port Charles in 2016, quickly becoming the subject of whispers as a Cassadine so formidable that even the notorious Helena Cassadine (Constance Towers) feared him.
His arrival was accompanied by a poignant backstory, revealing him as a once-miserable hunchback who trained at the World Security Bureau, hopelessly infatuated with the aloof Anna Devane (Finola Hughes).
Anna had been part of the WSB before her move to Port Charles in 1985, having already been an agent for seven years when she wed Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers).
This raises the question: where was Valentin between 1975 and 1988, when Will Cortlandt, at first Will Cooney, surfaced in Pine Valley?
Interestingly, during his first year there, he bore a striking resemblance to CBS New York weatherman Lonnie Quinn before transforming into Stuart; Quinn played Will first.
Just Lying Low All Those Years?
After undergoing surgery to correct his hunchback, Valentin sought a place to lay low while he devised his grand comeback to vanquish Helena and win Anna’s heart.
Pine Valley seemed like the perfect refuge; it exists within the same universe as Port Charles—and even Llanview—since characters often make crossover appearances, sometimes failing to recognize familiar faces.
Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot), resided in New York City for The City, where Jeremy Hunter (Jean LeClerc) had previously been part of the Loving cast after his stint on All My Children.
Thus, as we mentioned: it’s all interconnected; when Hayden Barnes (Rebecca Budig) first came on, she was from Beecher’s Corners but she previously was known as Greenlee Smythe in Pine Valley! Admittedly, it’s kind of hard to keep up with all the crossover actors and characters.
Did Valentin Cry Uncle, Or Was It Will?
Palmer Cortlandt (James Mitchell) encountered Will for the first time as an adult, leaving him uncertain about whether the man before him was genuinely his nephew. For that matter, what his past entailed, which might have involved a stint with the WSB.
While it’s true that Will was declared dead on air in 1992, sparking a major mystery, could he be the first Cassadine to stage his own death to start anew?
Actually he wouldn’t have been-that would have been his father, Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy) who faked his death and went into hiding in the eighties. And what was the reason for disposing of the passport?
Plenty Of Other Examples To Suggest Valentin Was Hiding Out In Pine Valley As Will
Then there was the situation of Llanview’s Tomas Delgado (Ted King) being thought to be Lorenzo Alcazar (Ted King) of Port Charles, unless his twin Luis Alcazar (Ted King) wasn’t really dead.
For that matter, Todd Manning (Roger Howarth) could have went away for a while and returned as Austin Gatlin-Holt if it hadn’t been for taking on the identity of Franco Baldwin!
So is it possible that Will Cortlandt could have been Valentin Cassadine all along while in Pine Valley?
It’s entirely possible-and not only that, potential jailbirds of a feather tend to stick together! After all, either Tad the Cad Martin (Michael E. Knight) or Ted Orsini (Michael E. Knight) could have showed up in Port Charles as Martin Grey!
