General Hospital (GH) spoilers reveal that 2024 was an incredible year for the ABC soap and its fans. Along the way, there were some incredible returns, and some controversial departures. Let’s take a look at some of the most stunning casting developments (in no particular order) of the last year!
General Hospital Shakeups
Steve Burton returned to the soap as Jason Morgan, following a one year stint on Days of Our Lives. He left in 2021 after choosing to not be vaccinated against Covid, per the network’s policy. His first episode back aired on Monday, March 4.
General Hospital Spoilers – Major Departures
Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Avery Pohl played star crossed lovers Spencer Cassadine and Esme Prince. Both left the show last year.
Chavez left to film a Ryan Murphy project, Monsters, about the Menendez brothers. On April 25 it was announced that he would not be returning. Pohl left the show earlier in the year and is not expected to return.
Tonja Walker’s character Olivia Jerome had not been seen in years, but it was revealed that the character was killed while in Pentonville.
Walker tweeted “Looks like I died. Oh what a rip! I wish we could have actually shot some great story but again, another missed opportunity… unless it’s not. I guess you never know. It wouldn’t be the first time.” Walker played Olivia from 1988 through 2017.
GH Spoilers – Bryan Craig’s Guest Spot
Bryan Craig returned for an episode in August, playing the dearly departed Morgan Corinthos. Rick Hearst also returned, as Ric Lansing, after an eight-year absence. Ric returned in August and is expected to stick around for the near future at least.
General Hospital Spoilers – Jonathan Jackson’s Return
Fan favorite Jonathan Jackson is back as Lucky Spencer after a ten year absence. According to reports he is back for an extended story and fans hope he will stick around for the long haul.
GH Spoilers – Michael Easton’s Departure
On the exit front, Michael Easton left the show as Hamilton Finn, filming his last scenes in June.
He said “I’ve loved every minute that I’ve been here. I want to thank the entire cast and crew for allowing me to share their stage this past 10 years. Most importantly, I want to thank all of you for the kindness and love you’ve shown me and my family. I won’t ever forget you. And as I walk out here for the last time, and with apologies to the great Lou Gehrig, I feel like the luckiest man on the face of the earth.”
Finn’s father, Gregory Chase, played by Gregory Harrison, also left the show. Harrison debuted in 2020 but once his character was diagnosed with ALS in 2023, fans knew he would be leaving and he did so in May 2024.
General Hospital Spoilers – Chad Duell Exits GH
Chad Duell debuted as Michael Corinthos in 2010 but in November 23 he announced his departure on Instagram “After many incredible years with General Hospital, I’ve decided to step away from the show. This wasn’t an easy decision for me, but it feels like the right time in my life. I’m beyond grateful to Frank Valentini, the cast, crew, and everyone behind the scenes who have been like family to me throughout this amazing journey.” He added “This isn’t a goodbye—it’s a see you later” leaving the door open to a return?
GH Spoilers – Cast: John J. York Is Back
John J. York left his role as Mac Scorpio in September 2023 due to a battle with myelodysplastic syndrome and smoldering multiple myeloma. He returned to the show just in time to learn Mac had a grown son he never knew about.
General Hospital Spoilers – Leslie Charleson is Not Returning
Leslie Charleson has played Monica Quartermaine for decades but hasn’t appeared since the end of 2023 due to health issues. A source told Closer Weekly “Although she’d be welcome back to the show with open arms, it’s unlikely she’ll ever return.”
GH Spoilers – Kelly Monaco Departed
Lastly, Kelly Monaco said farewell after two decades playing Sam McCall. Soap Opera Network reported that Kelly was let go and “blindsided” by the news. Sam died as a victim of the Digitalis Poisoner.
