Every soap opera thrives on the presence of a villain or two; sometimes, the bad guy’s identity is obvious right from the start.

However, there are moments when writers cleverly keep the audience guessing, revealing a dark side to a character who initially seems charming.

This twist is exactly what unfolded with Kerry-he first appeared in Salem as a potential love interest for Leo Stark (Greg Rikkart).

But when that romance fizzled, Kerry shifted his attention to Javi Hernandez (Al Calderon).

Eventually, Kerry was revealed as the mastermind behind the fake  Lady Whistleblower column, with a hidden agenda to take Leo down for supposedly ‘destroying’ the Body & Soul soap within the soap.

Javi Broke Up With Kerry, But Now He’s Back, And A Love Triangle Ensued

Javi ended his relationship with Kerry following the shocking revelation-however, the character has made a comeback in Salem and is now caught in a love triangle involving Leo and Javi.

Derek recently spoke with The U.S. Sun about his surprising return; “I discovered that I’m part of a new love triangle-It turns out I’m playing a bit of a villain. We’ll see how it all unfolds soon,” the actor hinted; since the show is filmed well in advance, Yates has already completed his scenes that are currently airing.

Although he suggested that Kerry’s stay in Salem might be brief, he remains optimistic about her potential return in the future. Derek mentioned that a director advised him not to “count himself out” when it comes to reappearing on the show.

Yates Has A Shocking Storyline Suggestion

If the show is struggling to figure out how to bring Kerry Youmans back, the actor has a creative idea. He mentioned to The Sun that the classic soap opera twist involving twins could be an ideal way for his return.

“With my new shorter hairstyle, it would be exciting to come back-they’re already exploring a twin storyline, so perhaps not exactly a twin, but something along those lines,” he proposed.

He elaborated, “I could return as the same character but with a twist—he’s a reformed version. He’s cut his hair, is seeking therapy, and wants to be a better person, aiming to mend things with Leo; it would be fascinating to see that transformation.”

Yates Was Surprised By The Pace Of the Soap

Soap operas may often be dismissed as lacking prestige, but the reality is that they demand a tremendous amount of effort.

Derek Yates shared in an interview that he was taken aback by the rapid pace of production in this genre; he explained that actors have limited time for rehearsals.

They typically run through their lines during the blocking process, but once the cameras start rolling, they only get one shot at it. “There’s no room for mistakes, there’s no time for ‘I think I could do better; they capture the scene, tell the story, and then it’s on to the next. This environment pushes actors to bring their A-game and truly embody their characters.”
