Why Prince Andrew And Prince Harry Cannot Stand In As Counsellors Of State In Wake Of Royal Crisis

The monarchy has never looked more slimmed-down than at the moment, with two of its major players out for the count.

The Princess of Wales recently underwent a planned abdominal surgery and the King will be having prostate surgery for a benign condition soon.

Both royals will need time to recover, and as they do, a host of royal duties, including foreign travels, will have to be postponed. As we all in our deepest hearts wish them speedy recovery, here’s exactly where the monarchy stands right now.

King Charles Quietly Removed Prince Harry And Prince Andrew From Ever Being Counsellors of State

While the King’s recovery time is not enough for Counsellors of State to be activated, his “corrective procedure” surgery did reveal that he swiftly removed his younger son and younger brother from ever stepping up as Counsellors of State almost immediately after his coronation.

In fact, they were removed on November 21, 2022, when it was announced in the House of Lords that the Royal Household confirmed that, in practice, only “working members of the royal family will be called on to act of Counsellors of State.”

This became law by December, with Princess Anne and Prince Edward being added to update the list. The change, however, was done so quietly it kind of went unnoticed until now.

Let’s just say that royal fans were in for a shock when news broke that the King and Princess of Wales were undergoing surgeries.

For Kate, she will need recuperation until at least April, and of course, William will be taking time off to be with her. This leaves Queen Camilla as one of the four most senior working royals still able to undertake royal duties.

As for deputizing the Counsellors of State, a royal expert revealed it’s not necessary.
“[Charles] is healthy—he will be able to read the contents of the Red Boxes from his bed, talk to others, as well as the Prime Minister,” royal biographer Marlene Koenig told The Daily Express. “He can meet with the PM virtually—Zoom or a telephone call.”

In other news, the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, is said to have been diagnosed with skin cancer.
