What The Stars Of ‘The Princess Diaries’ Have Said About Returning To The Sequel

It took them 23 years to finally decide to make a sequel to The Princess Diaries,’ so who’s onboard with it and who has so far moved on that the thought of Genovia fills them with horror? We’re here with the good good gist.

All We Know About The ‘The Princess Diaries 3’

We are no longer so far off from making a grand return to Genovia where another round of royal mayhem is possibly waiting for us. And director Adele Lim – another “die-hard fan” like some of us – has promised that the new sequel will honor the legacy of the first two.

“Miracles happen Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues,” Anne Hathaway shared on Instagram, breaking the happy news after years of fan speculation. What The Stars of 'The Princess Diaries' Have Said About Returning To the Sequel

However, prior to the big announcement, Meg Cabot, the author of the book which the franchise is based on, revealed in a 2017 interview with EW that she has read a script for the third movie.

This was followed up by Anne Hathawa, who revealed in 2019 on Watch What Happens Life that “there is a script for the third movie. There is a script. I want to do it, Julie [Andrews] wants to do it, Debra Martin Chase our producer wants to do it. We all really want it to happen.”

However, in 2022, the Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Disney has commissioned Aadrita Mukerji to write a different script for the third movie. In 2024, the good news dropped: ‘Princess Diaries 3’ is happening.

Anne Hathaway’s return has been confirmed, but there are two key players who might be missing from the sequel lineup. Yup, you got that right; Julie Andrews and Chris Pine. Like, shut up!

Chris Pine Tells Fans To Call Disney Boss Bob Iger After Confirming He Hasn’t Received A Call

There are many ‘Princess Diaries’ stars waiting for their phones to ring with “the” call to return to the hit franchise.

On the top of the list is Julie Andrews, who played the lovely grandma/mentor Queen Clarisse Renaldi. “I think I would [do it]. I’m getting awfully old and crotchety. I’m not sure if it’s the right timing, but I think to work with Annie would be lovely again,” Julie told The Talk @ Home in 2020. And though she is despairing of it these days, I’m sure if she got the call, she’ll soon be polishing her tiara.

When Pine was asked about it during an Oct. 2024 interview, he admitted the sequel would be “fantastic” even though he doesn’t “know anything” yet. However, he did advise fans to “call Disney! Call Bob Iger!”

Sandra Oh also shared similar enthusiasm, saying, “Yeah, that would be hilarious. Are you kidding? Sure. Yeah.”

In a chat with Drew Barrymore, Mandy Moore revealed that she’d love to reprise the character of Lana Thomas. “I kind of feel like my character was sort of the nemesis to Anne Hathaway’s character in the first film and she was so mean, I feel like maybe there’s no place for her [in a third film]… I would love, love, love to join those ladies again, anytime, but I also understand if there’s no room for my awful character.”
