The Little Couple alum, Jen Arnold is passionate about empowering little people, and one word that she detests is “midget.” For years the TLC show, along with Little People, Big World tried to educate folks about those with dwarfism but incredibly, there are still five schools stateside using a “midget” as a mascot and she thinks it’s wrong. So, she threw her wrought behind a petition to stop that sort of thing.
Jen Arnold Fights For People With Dwarfism
Although The Little Couple was canceled, the brilliant neonatal specialist uses her large platform to continue to educate people. Once, she ranted because there was no easy access to a salon and no refund for cancellation. On other occasions, she advocated for little people who face challenges in professional fields. This week, she put her shoulder behind a petition that’s been running for a few months.
TLC fans love that Jen Arnold continues to educate people and she explained all about why her son, Will Klein participates in sleep studies. Did you know that little people struggle with sleep apnea which can be very dangerous? Wherever she sees an opportunity, the former The Little Couple star lends a hand with awareness.
Taking On A ‘Midget’ Campaign
There had been a campaign on Change.org that seeks to stop the use of “midgets” as school mascots. Now, the petition to stop that has gotten a boost from the TLC alum. She shared about it on her Instagram. Hopefully, that will increase the number of signatories which currently stands at 5,330 signatures. Some of them were recent, so it seems as if her efforts are already paying off.
Jen Arnold probably reached quite a lot of The Little Couple fans as she is very popular on social media despite leaving TLC some years ago. In the petition, the organizers want to “retire midget mascots.” There are five schools, which are named that use midgets.
TLC Fans And Other Little People Comment
In the comments section where they could explain why they support the campaign to end “midget mascots” a lot of people opened up about their decision to sign. Here are a few of them:
- Hate being called this.
- My Mother and Sister have a form of dwarfism. The use of the word midget is harmful to real people. It’s not funny in the slightest and extremely outdated as a term. We should celebrate our differences, using harmful phrases isn’t how we do that.
- My daughter is a LP!! This is highly offensive to her and other LPs! Please sign! Be the change!!
- My brother is a little person. The M word is old news. It’s been said over and over how offensive it is. It’s time to put it to rest for good.
Do you agree that using the word “midget” and using people with dwarfism as mascots is outdated and extremely hurtful? Shout out to Jen Arnold for putting her weight behind the petition in the comments below, and come back here often for all your The Little Couple news and updates.
