For years, daytime dramas have been disappearing similar to the dinosaurs of the past. However, it seems that Soaps could be making a comeback if this year’s Emmy awards are any indication. Presently, there are only four classic soaps remaining, however, signs show that soaps are on the upswing.
The Daytime Emmys – Dick Van Dyke’s Emmy Win
Dick Van Dyke became the oldest person to win a Daytime Emmy at last week’s Emmy awards. Of course, Van Dyke played John Black’s (Drake Hogestyn) long lost father.
Van Dyke blended right in with the family and certainly enjoyed his guest spot on the show. After all, who wins an Emmy at his age?
While walking though the lobby of the Westin Bonaventure in L.A. Van Dyke came though followed by a huge entourage.
However, everyone was surprised to see Finola Hughes (Anna Devane, GH) came running up and telling Dick how much everyone loved him, before rushing off to do other things.
The Daytime Emmys – Surrounded By Stars
Dick was at the Emmys surrounded by hundreds of other stars, and how did this come about? Drake, who attends the same gym as Van Dyke is what brought this about.
Hogestyn suggested that Van Dyke join the soap and guest star as Timothy Robicheaux, a veteran who had lost his memory but knew that he was looking for his son.
Van Dyke ended up finding his son, his daughter in law, his grandchildren, great grandchildren, and a real family.
This poor man had enough back stories but cover for every back story everyone else in John’s past had as well. Finding out the truth was amazing for Timothy when he realized that John was his son.
The Daytime Emmys – Soap Operas Began On Radio Often Powered By Women
Soap Operas got their name from it appeal to stay at home moms. Proctor and Gamble would often advertise their soaps and laundry detergents to the women who were watching from home.
Years ago, you could find cups, plates, etc. in your laundry detergent after buying it at the local grocery store.
The advertisers may have changed over the years but the stories behind the soap never have, the is what keeps people watching from day to day.
Thorsten Kaye (Ridge Forrester, B&B) says, “Soaps are unique: unlike movies, or even other long-running shows, their characters grow with their audience, every day, for decades.”
Kaye’s co-star and leading lady, Katherine Kelly Lang (Brooke Logan, B&B) commented about her character,” If she was not in my life, I would miss her, she is a part of me.” Other stars may attend the Emmys, but it is the daytime stars who own the spotlight here.
CBS recently announced a new soap opera “The Gates” which will appear in January. If this soap takes off, could that mean more will follow leading to a revival of the soap opera? Would you like to see this happen?
