Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso’s Charity Sentebale has been losing key members over the past few months, and CEO Richard Miller is the latest to leave the organization after leading it for over five years.
It may be a blessing in disguise in some way as the charity looks forward to establishing a stronger foothold in Africa.
How Sentebale Plans On Moving Forward In the Future After Losing Key Members
Inspired by Princess Diana’s favorite flower, Forget Me Nots, Sentebale, which translates to Forget Me Not, was founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006 following the 40-year-old duke’s gap year there in 2004.
The organization caters to children affected by extreme poverty and HIV/AIDS in Lesotho, Botswana and Malawi. In an unprecedented move, Miller joins three other key staff members in quitting the organization within months.
After 18 years on the board, Baroness Lynda Chalker stepped down as the organization’s director, while Johnny Hornby resigned after 11 years as a trustee, five of which he spent as chairman.
Andrew Tucker also stepped back from his senior position in the charity. While it looks sketchy on the surface for an organization to lose major players in quick succession, Sentebale has chosen to make good use of it by establishing a stronger presence in Southern Africa.
What Sentebale Has Said About Their Future Without Chief Richard Miller
Following Miller’s exit, the charity confirmed their decision to lean towards basing their most critical roles in Africa, and while Miller’s work was praised, he did do the job based out of London.
In a joint statement, Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso said: “Leading into our 20th anniversary, our organisation will be locally led, aligning with the global movement towards fostering greater local agency and ownership. This shift reflects our continued commitment to being guided by voices from within the region we serve.”
Further thanking Miller for his five years of service, they wrote, “Sentebale has greatly benefited from Richard’s extensive expertise in international development.
We are deeply grateful for his compassionate leadership and unwavering commitment to empowering children, young people, and their communities across Southern Africa. We sincerely thank Richard for his pivotal role in steering our organisation toward this important evolution.”
Miller’s replacement Carmel Gaillard is a development leader based in South Africa.
In his personal statement, Miller called Gaillard’s hiring as the “logical next step” for the charity.
