Princess Beatrice has always been said to be the one who engineered the Newsnight interview that tarnished Prince Andrew’s image and sent him packing from royal life.

In new show, we see her persuading her father to go through with the plan even though he is having second thoughts.

Prince Andrew is trying his best to move on from his disastrous Newsnight interview, even though documentaries are doing their best to draw him back.

In ‘A Very Royal Scandal,’ the Duke of York is back at the scene of the interview that ruined his reputation, but he is having second thoughts about getting on air with Emily Maitlis.

The actress, Honor Swinton Byrne, playing Beatrice in the show is seen pleading with her father to reconsider his stance on the matter and go through with the interview as planned.

Several royal aides and then-Prince Charles are depicted to be against the idea, even as Beatrice pushes to have it happen.

When Beatrice learns that Charles called to express his reservations about the interview and advise Andrew against it, she says, “No, that’s really wrong of him. He should be supporting you, not telling you off. You’re family.”

Emotional Andrew is later seen moaning, “I’ve never been in this much trouble before.”

However, Beatrice refuses to let her resolve be shaken, as she assures her father, “You’ve done nothing wrong. Nothing. So, just tell them the truth. And Granny’s behind it, yes?”
Andrew admits the Queen is aware, with Beatrice saying, “that’s good.”

Princess Beatrice Was “Face-to-face” With Her Father During Infamous Newsnight Interview

In real life, even though Andrew has two daughters whom he is close to, it was notably Beatrice who inspired him to do the interview.

Sam McAlister, the author of ‘Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interviews,’ shared tidbits about the interview in 2022. At the time, McAlister revealed for the first time that Princess Beatrice was present in the room as her father Prince Andrew was being interviewed.

The producer claimed that the Duke’s daughter sat across from her father just out of view of the cameras during the whole interview.

She added: “Imagine speaking about the things we had to talk about in that tiny room – face-to-face with her father who is accused of those heinous acts.”
