Prince Harry Withdraws Libel Case, Wants To Focus On Other Things

Prince Harry has, in a shocking move, withdrawn his libel case against Associated Newspaper Limited (ANL).

The 38-year-old brought the case against the Mail on Sunday publisher as a result of an article they ran about his legal challenge against the Home Office. Now, he’s opted to forego that case in favor of his case against the Home Office.

Why Did Prince Harry Sue Associated Newspaper Limited

In Feb. 2022, Mail on Sunday published a story regarding Harry’s plan to challenge Home Office’s decision to downgrade his publicly funded security arrangements.

They accused Harry of trying to “keep details of his legal battle to reinstate his police protection secret from the public.”

The headline for this particular article read: “Exclusive: How Prince Harry tried to keep his legal fight with the government over police bodyguards a secret… then – just minutes after the story broke – his PR machine tried to put a positive spin on the dispute.”

Harry’s team resisted the claim in a statement, saying that the story “purported to reveal, in sensational terms” that information from court documents “contradicted public statements he had previously made about his willingness to pay for police protection for himself and his family whilst in the UK.”

The statement also insisted that the article was “an attack on his honesty and integrity,” and that it would undermine his charity efforts.

In return, ANL said the article expressed an “honest opinion” that was not too damaging.
After bringing on the lawsuit against ANL, Harry’s team tried to get the paper’s defence thrown out and judgement granted on his favor without trial.

In a ruling last month, Harry lost this bid and was ordered to pay £48,447 towards the publisher’s lawyers’ bill.

Prince Harry Settles ANL Lawsuit For This Reason

On Friday, 19 Jan., Prince Harry surprisingly filed to end his case against ANL. According to his spokesperson, Harry’s focus remains on the safety of his family and as a result of this, he has decided to quit pursuing the ANL case in order to concentrate on the one against Home Office.

A different judge is presiding over his case against the Home Office and judgement is expected at a later date.
