Many argued that on top of being privileged, he was “divisive” and that there were far worthier candidates.
From 1,500 American adults that took part in a Newsweek polling, 38 percent opposed the move to present the Prince with the award, 21 percent agreed he deserved it, and the rest didn’t care either way.
According to American writer Lee Cohen, Harry and Meghan lost much of their American fans because of their “whining.” In fact they’ve been dubbed the couple “who love to complain.”
In the column for The Sun, Cohen wrote: “What a difference four years makes. When the Sussexes moved to the US in 2020 they were warmly received. In a country where monarchy and aristocracy are elusive, they had a status dollars couldn’t buy.”
“They represented a modern twist on royal life, blending titles with Hollywood star power.
Their initial appeal was undeniable. High-profile interviews, such as the explosive sitdown with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021, captivated millions. While UK viewers may have “cringed” at some of the over-the-top — and often preposterous — claims, US audiences were rapt,” Cohen continued.
“Americans don’t mind their stars emoting. We don’t have the stiff upper lip that you Brits possess! But we have our limits, too. Eventually, the couple’s relentless media presence led to overexposure, even fatigue.”
Touching on the reception fans and critics alike gave their Netflix docuseries, Cohen wrote, “The release of their six-hour Netflix docuseries in December 2022 initially boosted their popularity but ended up receiving polarising receptions from audiences and critics.”
‘Harry And Meghan’ received an audience score of 19 percent on Rotten Tomatoes – a very poor rating indeed. But perhaps it’s the sharp words from critics that dealt the couple the heaviest blow.
The Variety wrote: “There’s an air of duty about the entire enterprise of ‘Harry & Meghan’, as if they’re honour-bound to keep reciting their personal story until we eventually lose interest.”
The Wall Street Journal added: “A viewer really has to be on board the royal soap opera bus not to be bored out of one’s mind by Harry & Meghan.”
But the docuseries was not the last. ‘Spare’ and the ensuing interviews followed, and by then, fans were used to the royal bashing.
Even though they’ve seemingly reeled in the royal bashing this year, royal biographer Tom Bower recently claimed that it’s because Meghan is writing her own book.
