It doesn’t take a genius IQ for Welcome to Plathville fans to know that Moriah Plath is a troubled young woman. So this week, TLC fans wondered if any of her mental health issues stemmed from the death of her little brother Joshua. Read on to find out more insights.
Moriah Plath Seems To Be Traumatized
In Season 1 of the TLC show, Welcome To Plathville fans saw that Barry and Kim Plath referred to their daughter as a “rebel.” It became clear to fans that she was different from her siblings, and wanted to escape from the restrictive environment on the farm. She did, but went back to her dad broken and sad after she and Max Kallschmidt split.
While Welcome to Plathville fans felt sorry for Moriah Plath after her split, it didn’t seem to account for the darkness that followed. Her songs became increasingly gloomy, and she seemed to quickly turn against those who had previously supported her. So, some fans wonder if her trauma preceded Max by over a decade.
Did Joshua’s Death Severely Damage Moriah?
Joshua was the little boy who died after Kim Plath ran him over. It was ruled accidental, but it seems that the family seldom talks about it. In fact, it was Olivia who said that she had been with Ethan Plath for a full two years before she even heard about the accident. Naturally, if terrible trauma isn’t discussed then it could cause mental health issues. So TLC fans wonder if that is at the bottom of Moriah Plath’s problems.
The Discussion About Morah
On Reddit this week, Welcome to Plathville fan u/Sufficient_Self9341 raised the subject of the ages that the kids were when Joshua died. They also suggested that Ethan Plath felt it a lot. In part, they said:
I watched an old episode where Ethan talked about how he compartmentalizes things, and that led me to think of how it must have affected him when his little brother died. And if that’s when he began shutting down and comparmentalizing things he didn’t know how to talk about or work through…
In the comments section, while other TLC fans agreed that all the kids were probably traumatized, many of them discussed how it might have affected Moriah Plath, Here are some of their thoughts:
- Moriah recently mentioned in an episode that she was about 6…when Josh died.
- Yeah, she also mentioned she saw what happened fairly closer than the other kids. That must’ve been traumatizing.
- …this is at the core of Moriah’s acting out/emotional instability.
- I wonder if witnessing this horrible accident had something to do with triggering her alopecia. I know they say she was 8 when she had fully lost her hair, but the alopecia could have been working “behind the scenes” up to that point.
- I think that watching what happened to her brother and the aftermath is 75% of Moriah’s issues.
What are your thoughts on the idea that the death of Joshua was the root cause of Moriah Plath’s mental health issues? Do you agree that she probably never got any proper therapy to help her cope with the loss of her brother?
