Sister Wives fans are well aware that Robyn and Kody Brown wanted a divorce by Meri Brown so he could adopt Robyn’s kids by her first husband. But was the TLC star conned into something that had no legal standing? Read on to find out what a family law attorney suggested recently.
Meri Brown Thought She Was Helping The Kids
On Sister Wives, it became obvious to viewers that Kody’s first wife felt devasted about him wanting her to divorce him. As far as fans of the TLC show were concerned, adopting the kids was a ploy by Robyn to get rid of her main competition. But, upset as she was, Leon’s mother felt that she should give Breanna. Aurora, and Dayton the best opportunities.
Meri Brown agreed to the divorce and Robyn and Kody Brown couldn’t get her to the lawyer’s office fast enough. Off they went, and the fortunes of Meri were turned upside down by the stroke of a pen. But now, it turns out that it might have all been a big con. Read on to find out why.
A Big Adoption Con?
This week, a Sister Wives fan went onto Reddit and claimed that they work as a family attorney. Admittedly, not in Utah, but they did some research into the adoption laws. So, here’s what they found out:
Attorney here with a comment on the adoption of DAB…I’m a family law attorney, not in Nevada, Arizona, Utah, or Wyoming. The adoption episodes didn’t pass the sniff test with me—some of the explanations for the divorce, natural father’s consent, and references to child support didn’t hold water. Then I dug into Nevada’s adoption code and behold!
“A married person not lawfully separated from his or her spouse may not adopt a child without the consent of his or her spouse.”
The TLC fan explained that this meant that Meri Brown needn’t have gotten divorced from Kody Brown for him to adopt Robyn Brown’s kids. They elaborated, saying, “There you have it. Meri could have filed her consent in the adoption along with the natural father’s and it would have been done, no divorce required.”
TLC Fans React To The Information
In the discussion that followed, Sister Wives fans felt that the new information definitely revealed a con or a scam by the two TLC stars. Here are some of their reactions:
- Thank you for lending us your law brain and research skill! This is very interesting and more proof how that divorce was a scam.
- So, are they ignorant and unwilling to look into the law, over-dramatic, manipulative, or all of the above?
- …the divorce wasn’t suppose to change anything, right? Or so K&R sold it to her that way. After things didn’t change or at least didn’t change for the best, it was probably even more heartbreaking for her!
- I fully believe they sold her some bull sh*t and she just wanted Kodys love so she agreed.
- I always thought it was a red flag that Meri didn’t have her own attorney. I think Kody and Robyn planned this so Robyn would be the legal wife and, therefore, the most important in their mind.
