Kevin Costner is taking ‘Horizon’s’ underwhelming success in his stride and believes time might turn it around. Here’s what he has to say about Chapter One’s limited success and his hopes for Chapter Two.
Kevin Costner Believed ‘Yellowstone’ Fan Base Would Support “Passion Project” ‘Horizon’
Kevin Costner’s passion project, in which he sunk millions of his own money, is not receiving the proper welcome from audiences as he expected.
According to insiders, Costner thought the massive fan base around ‘Yellowstone’ would support the project because they more or less explored the same topic of American westward expansion, and well, they both had cowboys.
Despite the fact that it got a ten minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film festival – something that made Costner emotional – critics were soon ripping it apart for being a boring and poorly written movie.
However, Costner has not totally despaired of ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ finding a home in the hearts of movie lovers and even history buffs, because, according to the star, they tried their best to replicate history with the project.
Kevin Costner Reacts To ‘Horizon Chapter Two’s’ Scrapped Theatrical Release
On Saturday, Costner opened up about the first movie’s reception in a Venice Film Festival prese conference.
Weighing in on why the studio decided not to give the second movie a theatrical release, he reasoned that it was probably “a reaction” to the underperformance of the first movie at the box office.
“It didn’t have overwhelming success,” Costner said of the first film. “I’ve had a lot of movies that way, that have stood the test of time.”
He added that it was the studio’s “decision to release “Chapter Two” six weeks after “Chapter One,” and “it became a studio decision to not.”
Even though it didn’t work out according to plan, Costner believes it still worked out right.
“For me, it fell back into my plan, which was I always wanted to come out with movies about five-six months apart. And that was going to allow me to come to Venice,” he said. “I would have never come to Venice, because they won’t show the film here if it was already out.”
While there has indeed been massive setbacks – the movie earned $11 million in its opening weekend, even though it carried a $100 million budget – Costner refuses to be beaten.
