Last week, news surfaced that King Charles is keen on turning up the pressure on Prince Andrew to get him to vacate Royal Lodge.
The problem is that Andrew can barely fund the yearly costs needed to maintain the impressive mansion, so the King has decided to give him the more modest Frogmore Cottage to be his new home.
A Brief Explanation On Prince Andrew’s History With Royal Lodge
According to sources close to Prince Andrew, he does not want to vacate the property because it was where he raised his two daughters – Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie – and hopes to spend time with his grandchildren as they grow up.
He currently lives there with his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, even though they’ve been divorced for nearly thirty years now.
The impressive mansion boasts of 30 bedrooms and stands on a whopping 40 hectares of land. Andrew got the lease to Royal Lodge following the Queen Mother’s death.
He used his own money to fund the renovations, and in 2004, he moved in with his daughters. Soon after, his ex-wife moved in as well.
Andrew’s 75-year lease on the property extends from the main house, the Gardener’s Cottage, the Chapel Lodge, six Lodge Cottages, police security accommodation and the aforementioned 40 hectares of land. Impressive, ay? But even more impressive is the amount of money needed to maintain it annually: $400,000 or thereabouts.
Due to Andrew stepping down from his royal duties and having to shell out millions to settle accuser Virginia Giuffre out of court, he reportedly can no longer comfortably fund the upkeep of the property. To prevent the mansion from falling into disrepair, Charles has advised him to move into the recently renovated Frogmore Cottage. But sources say he doesn’t intend to budge.
It is said the King eased his pressure on Andrew to vacate the property out of respect for his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson due to her cancer diagnosis.
What Sources Have Said About the Prince and Princess of Wales’ Interest In Royal Lodge
As Andrew faces increased pressure to vacate Royal Lodge, rumors have started swirling that the lease could go to the Prince and Princess of Wales, who live close by with their three young children in the smaller Adelaide Cottage.
However, a royal source has downplayed these rumors, revealing that William and Kate “extremely happy” in their four-bed cottage. “They are there as a family with total privacy and without lots of staff,” an official was quoted saying in the biography, ‘Charles III: The Inside Story.’
