General Hospital (GH) spoilers note that there are fans out there who are #TeamNina; however, there are also viewers who can’t stand the character. Taking a closer look at her history could provide some insight into why Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) is the way she is.
She seems so bent on revenge against Carly Spencer (Laura Wright), although her current target is Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison).
Nina has endured many ups and downs over the years but also had a very hard time during her younger years. This could explain why she lies so much, and can’t let things “go” at times.
GH spoilers note that Nina was first introduced to GH audiences in the spring of 2014. At that point in time, she was played by actress Michelle Stafford, who’s best known for her role as Phyllis Summers on the Young and the Restless (Y&R).
While it was believed that Silas placed Nina in her coma initially, it was ultimately revealed that her mom Madeline Reeves (Donna Mills) accidentally did so when she gave Nina antidepressants to miscarry the child she was carrying, which happened to be Silas’s.
Nina’s mom was a vile villainess, who traumatized her while growing up.
Silas was dating Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) at the time of Nina’s return, and of course, she schemed to break them. She also faked needing a wheelchair, when she was more than capable of walking on her own.
While she ended up being successful in winning Silas back, he broke up with Nina when her lies were exposed. Still, that didn’t stop her from more scheming as she was desperate to replace the baby she and Silas lost.
So much so, that she forced Ava Jerome (Maura West) into early labor and stole Avery Corinthos (Ava and Grace Scarola). She went on the run with Franco Baldwin (Roger Howarth) and the newborn.
However, authorities eventually caught up with her. Nina was able to plead “not guilty” due to insanity and was committed to Shadybrook.
Nina and Franco ended up bonding and diving into a relationship. After all, he sacrificed his sanity by committing himself to Shadybrook to protect her. Sadly, they ended up breaking. Nina moved on to Ric Lansing (Ric Hearst).
However, he only wanted her for her inheritance, so that didn’t last long, either. Nina was also accused of murdering Silas in the midst of all this when she was found holding a knife above his already-dead body.
Still, the culprit turned out to be her mom, Madeline, and she went to jail for the crime.
After that debacle, Nina left Ric and embarked on a fresh chapter. She convinced Julian Jerome (William DeVry) to give her the editor and chief job at Crimson, and this began her era with the fashion magazine.
It is there that she grew closer to Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart). Along with the romance came stepmother duties for Charlotte Cassadine (Scarlett Fernandez), which helped fill a hole in Nina’s heart over the loss of her own daughter.
She embarked on a mission to find her lost child, which led to the arrival of Sasha Gilmore (Sofia Mattsson) in town.
The two grew close; however, sadly, it was revealed that Sasha was not Nina’s daughter and just an imposter Valentin bought off to pretend to be the baby Ms. Reeves lost so many years ago.
This led to Nina’s break up with Valentin. She eventually gravitated toward Jasper “Jax” Jacks (Ingo Rademacher), and the two had some incredible sparks. Jax bought into Aurora Media and was Nina’s boss.
Nina would eventually give schemer Nelle Benson (Chloe Lanier) a job at Crimson, who was trying to get custody of her son, Wiley Corinthos (Veron Weaver).
While the two did bond slightly, Nina was unsure if she could trust Nelle or not, and she ended up testifying against her in a court battle to win Wiley back.
At the time, Nina didn’t know that Nelle was her long-lost daughter; a fact she would find out well after Ms. Benson passed away; a fact that Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) knew about and would end up hiding from her, for a long while.
Still, that wasn’t the only betrayal she endured, as Nina also figured out that Jax knew about Nelle and was keeping it a secret for Carly’s sake.
Frustrated, she left Port Charles to reconnect with old friend and nurse, Phyllis Caulfield (Joyce Guy) in Nixon Falls.
Of course, this is where she meant and fell in love with Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) during a time he was suffering from amnesia and thought he was “Mike”.
She tried to call Carly initially when she stumbled upon Sonny that first night at Phyllis’s bar, but Ms. Spencer shot the conversation down.
Nina ended up keeping Sonny’s existence a secret in Nixon Falls for months, while his family and loved ones thought he was dead.
Of course, after the Nixon Falls reveal, Sonny was quite upset with Nina, as was Carly, but the feelings and romance they shared while out of Port Charles were far too much for him, and he succumbed to his emotions.
This caused his marriage with Carly to dissolve and created a wedge between him and his son Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell).
Still, before Nina’s SEC secret spill against Darly (and the domino effect that was caused in her life, bringing her to her current circumstance), she also found out that Willow Corinthos (Katelyn MacMullen) was her other biological daughter, an unknown twin baby that was born, along with Nelle.
Of course, Carly had known this all along, too, and hid it from her, clocking two daughters that Ms. Spencer “kept” from Nina.
