General Hospital (GH) spoilers and updates reveal Alexa Havins Bruening thought she was done acting until she was offered the role of Lulu Spencer. Here’s what she says about her two decades plus away from acting, and bringing Lulu to life on GH.
General Hospital Spoilers – It’s Good To Be Home
There’s no place like home,” expresses Alexa Havins Bruening, who is set to make her debut on General Hospital as Lulu Spencer on Tuesday, November 19, when Lulu awakens.
Lulu is the daughter of the iconic soap couple, Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) and Laura Collins (Genie Francis). “It feels like I’m slipping back into something I cherished deeply.”
It’s been more than twenty years since Havins Bruening first graced daytime television in 2003 as Babe Carey on All My Children.
During her time in Pine Valley, she found love with co-star Justin Bruening (Jamie Martin), and the two tied the knot in June 2005.
GH Spoilers – Motherhood Became Alexa Havins’s Top Priority
They left the soap opera in 2007, and Havins kept performing, but being a mother became her main focus-“I didn’t plan to work,” she says. “I thought my career was over. When I got the role in Sweet Magnolias and they asked me to play Justin’s ex [Vicky; he plays Cal Maddox], I told him, ‘This will tie everything up nicely.
It’ll be great for the kids; we met on my first project and now on my last one.’ I really believed that since I had taken time off to be with the kids and concentrate on raising them; we home-school-however, her husband never lost faith. “Justin would always joke with me., he’d say, ‘Oh babe, I paid your SAG dues;’ He constantly supported me, saying, ‘I’m not giving up on you.’
General Hospital Spoilers: Until–
Alexa continued, I’d respond, ‘Sure, I’m pregnant with another baby-thanks for paying my SAG dues;’ so I didn’t think about working at all.” That is, until she started collaborating with Bruening to assist high school students in a film program. “This summer, I visited a close friend in Colorado-while we were talking, she asked me, ‘Have you thought about acting again?’” Havins Bruening shares.
“I replied, ‘It’s interesting you mention that because in the past few months of working with these students, I’ve been considering it again, but I’m uncertain.’” Her friend suggested that she pray about it, and so she did.
GH Spoilers – Prayers Answered
Alexa continued; they live on a lovely piece of land, and the next morning, I took a walk and enjoyed some quiet time with the Lord. I shared my thoughts, and by the end of the week, Mark Teschner and Frank Valentini called me-I still get chills thinking about it.
I know this story might sound strange to some, but I was truly amazed”-Havins Bruening was eager to hear what they had to say. “Frank and I connected really well in New York. Since I crossed over to One Life to Live as Babe from 2003 to 2005, we had a lot of interactions, and we just really liked each other,” she explains.
General Hospital Spoilers – Alexa Havins Continues Talking About Frank Valentini And Mark Teschner, And Lulu
I really enjoyed how he handled his role as a producer-Mark Teschner is truly amazing, and I really admire him. When they began discussing the role, they were a bit vague at first, but then they revealed it was for Lulu, which really piqued my interest because she’s such a fascinating character.
After talking with Bruening about how they would run their home if she went back to work, the actress met with the head writers and Valentini.
I wanted to understand where Lulu was before the incident that put her in a coma in 2020, what her relationships were like, and what the audience loves about her.
Lulu is unique because of her own qualities, she says, noting that previous Lulus, Julie Berman and Emme Rylan, also added their personal touch to the role.
GH Spoilers – Alexa Havins Will Bring Her Own “Brand” Of Lulu Spencer
Havins Bruening firmly states, “I have no intention of imitating the other two women; I’m not looking to be like them at all-Julie is uniquely Julie, and Emme is distinctly Emme. Naturally, my portrayal will reflect a more mature side of her, but I am my own person and can’t replicate them; Lulu is a fiery spirit. She adores her mother, yet she’s very much her father’s daughter, always ready to take bold risks; my goal is to capture the true essence of who she is.” She didn’t turn to YouTube to watch past episodes featuring Berman or Rylan; she mentions, “I avoided watching clips or anything similar because I didn’t want to take that approach. The connections she has with the key figures in her life are very important to me.”
General Hospital Spoilers – Connecting And Making Connections
Alexa asks about Lulu’s relationship with her mother and how she interacts with her brother, Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson). She wonders about Lulu’s connection with Dante Falconeri, (Dominic Zamprogna) noting that their chemistry should still be present.
Regarding Zamprogna, Havins Bruening shares, “I really like him; we got along instantly, he mentioned that when he saw me on set, he felt a ‘Julie vibe.’ He’s very kind.”
Havins Bruening also enjoyed reuniting with familiar faces from her time in Pine Valley-she mentions seeing Cameron Mathison, who played Drew Quartermaine on GH and Ryan Lavery on AMC.
Also Eva LaRue, who portrayed Natalia Ramirez on GH and Maria Santos on AMC; “It’s funny how it feels the same even after all this time.
GH Spoilers – Alexa Havins Talks About Michael E. Knight
During this interview, she was still hoping to meet Michael E. Knight (Martin Grey), who portrayed Tad Martin on AMC, her character’s father and Babe’s stepfather. “Justin is really jealous,” she laughs-“I told him, ‘Justin, I think Lulu needs a distraction, and you should join in.’ I was trying to get him interested, and I could tell he was thinking about it; then he asked, ‘But will I get to work with Michael Knight?’ I thought, ‘Hold on, forget about me-I see where I stand; I’m way below Mikey; but who doesn’t love Michael Knight? He’s so nice, I’m looking forward to it, but no, we haven’t met yet-we’re related now [Martin is Lulu’s uncle], so we’ll get to explore that.”
General Hospital Spoilers – The Mr. Mom Formerly Of Pine Valley
Bruening is taking care of the kids while mom is getting her hair and makeup done. “Justin is at home with the kids,” she shares; “He’s a wonderful dad and husband-he’s on a break from Sweet Magnolias, so it’s perfect.” She also mentions that their family has grown in recent years; “We have four kids,” Havins Bruening reveals, they have a surprise baby.
Our oldest daughter is 14, our son is 11, and we have two more daughters, ages eight and four. If this had happened a year or two ago, I would have had a toddler and probably would have said, ‘Thanks, but I can’t.’”
GH Spoilers – Alexa Havins Looks Forward To Bringing Lulu Spencer To Life On Screen
Havins Bruening is excited about her next role in daytime television, feeling at peace at home-she shares, “The writers have created some really exciting storylines. We know my character is waking up from a four-year coma, so there will be many surprises, and we’re starting off strong. Being part of the next adventure with the Spencer family is very fulfilling. It’s an honor to contribute to such an important family in daytime TV. I want to respect what Genie and Anthony created, continue their story, and give the audience what they want from Lulu.”
