Unlike other organs which require the donor to be deceased, a portion of a healthy liver can be transplanted, replacing the diseased one and regenerate itself.
Longtime viewers will remember a teenage Nikolas Cassadine (Adam Huss) saved Lulu’s life as a baby, donating bone marrow when she had aplastic anemia as her older half-brother.
Her whole brother, Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson) may be the only option to be tested for a liver transplant, considering Nikolas is still in prison.
Lucky will be in Port Charles again sometime after the week of August 26, arriving from Africa where he’s been doing volunteer work along with their other half-brother Ethan Lovett (James Ryan).
Considering Lulu’s dire diagnosis, their mother Laura Collins (Genie Francis) will undoubtedly contact Lucky and let him know, after locating Charlotte Cassadine (Scarlett Fernandez) with Anna Devane’s (Finola Hughes) help. Even if Nikolas wanted to step up, from prison it would be difficult to arrange.
Lulu has been in an indeterminate coma for several years, after suffering a traumatic brain injury in the explosion of the Floating Rib.
She had headache symptoms but kept brushing them off for a couple of days until she collapsed-talking to Dante Falconeri, (Dominic Zamprogna) who caught her.
Lulu had whispered to Dante she loved him, but he didn’t hear her say it-and then she fell unconscious and has been in a special care facility for comatose patients ever since.
Laura has never given up hope that Lulu would wake up and return to a normal, albeit very different life with so many things changed.
In a recent episode, her son with Dante, Rocco Falconeri (Finn Francis Carr) talked about his mom to his dad-he said he believed she could hear him when he speaks.
Granted, both Rocco and Charlotte are teenagers but when you get right down to it, they’re Lulu’s children-Rocco with Dante and Charlotte with Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart).
Either one would be willing to donate a piece of their liver if it means saving their mother’s life-but neither Laura nor Lulu would want that.
Laura may even offer to get tested herself to see if she’s a match, and likely even Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober) will offer, since he’s been visiting and reading the Bible.
But that might be where Lucky gets a chance to save Lulu’s life like their half-brother, who he considered an outsider did so many years ago. Many years have passed since his and Nicolas’ rivalry, and after all, their sister getting a chance at survival’s what counts.
