Her motivation for pulling copies of Heather Webber’s (Alley Mills) court records to screen them for any semblance of her health condition being factored into her sentence has caught her some unexpected flack.
Laura is just trying to do the right thing, though she might admit she’s torn between what is truly just a pursuit of justice, and what is a pursuit of giving her old friend a second chance at life.
It’s not just people like Curtis Ashford (Donnell Turner), Portia Robinson (Brook Kerr), Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali), and Diane Miller (Carolyn Hennesy) who have a problem with Laura’s latest act in office. The fans are speaking up as well, and they say this storyline doesn’t track.
Alright, not every fan is ticked that Laura is pushing for Heather’s case to be re-examined. But most are admitting that she’s being a little overtly obtuse about it. Regardless, longtime GH fans sympathize with Laura and know what she sees in Heather.
Since receiving treatment for cobalt poisoning, Heather has softened a bit and begun to show remorse for her actions. Moreover, she’s quite confused and heartbroken about why she did the things she did, allegedly.
Ever the optimist, Laura always wants to see the good in everyone, and she knows that good once existed in her always somewhat crazy friend.
Still, the writing is on the wall when it comes to how Laura is handling this situation. She’s acting as though she lacks the experience or knowledge to understand a wrongful conviction, or mental illness. Hello? Do we not remember when Laura herself was suffering from a catatonic state for years?
Somehow she has earned back the trust of the people of Port Chuck enough to become their presiding mayor, but they may come to regret casting that vote if Heather is set free because of the wheels of justice that Laura set in motion.
As Laura pushes forward with her plan to ensure Heather receives a fair trial — even if that reopens her case — we could do without her feigning dumb that she has no idea what could happen or whether the knowledge of Heather’s condition would count as evidence to reopen a case. She’s been around the legal and medical scene long enough to know better.
With election day soon to be upon the citizens of New York, people like Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) are making the best of their time by pulling in all the right team members to make their run for office a success.
We aren’t seeing that with Laura. So we have to wonder whether she’s careening toward a pivotal moment in which she steps down from her mayoral duties and relinquishes them to Jordan Ashford (Tanisha Harper).
That would dovetail nicely given how cozy Drew and Jordan have been getting. Will Laura read the room and realize she has lost the faith of her previous supporters all in the name of looking out for Heather of all people?
