From the moment Goivannia ‘Gio’ Palmieri (Giovanni Mazza) came to Port Charles, we were briefed on the subject of his extended family with the Cerullos and how both of his parents died.
Gio’s mother passed away when he was ten years old, and it sounds like Sonny had some kind of special relationship with her, though it wasn’t necessarily romantic in nature.
Gio’s dad died in the war before he was born, and he instantly connected with Dex Heller (Evan Hofer) when he heard he too had served in Afghanistan in the military.
The fans are eating up every hint being dropped that Gio might be Jason Morgan’s (Steve Burton) long-lost son, but the storyline doesn’t exactly track. We don’t have much knowledge of Jason spending time in Bensonhurst.
That was Sonny’s old stomping ground — and where he came to father Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) and know the Cerullo clan.
Gio’s upbringing was rife with trauma after losing his mother, and Sonny took him under his wing, becoming his benefactor. But was that because he knew Gio was Jason’s son? It’s not likely.
On the other hand, everyone has suspected since Dex first hit the ground running in Port Charles that he might be Jason’s long-lost son, too.
Boy, we’re really gunning for this storyline, aren’t we? Sure, Dex seems a bit like Stone Cold. He’s humble and endlessly loyal to the people he cares about.
Then we saw him mirror Jason in some ways as he began to work for Sonny. At the same time, he made some critical errors that Jason never would have made — and he betrayed Sonny in ways Jason never would’ve co-signed or participated in either.
In fact, had Jason been alive, he never would’ve let Carly dig that hole and bring Dex and Michael Corinthos (Chad Duell) into it with her. Nevertheless, Dex is adopted and we still don’t know who his adoptive or biological parents are.
We do know Gio was drawn to him right away like they had some kind of connection. Was that all in his head?
It’s possible that Gio is not Jason’s son, but Sonny’s. This doesn’t perfectly track with the Sonny we’ve always known and loved either. He’s selfish. He never lets anyone keep him away from his kids, so why would he in this instance?
Might he agree to keep his distance but somehow pay to support his child if the Cerullo family did not really adore him and threatened to expose some of his crimes?
How deep could this go? Are Olivia Quartermaine (Lisa LoCicero) and Lois Cerullo (Rena Sofer) aware of the truth?
Is Gio just another in a long line of Sonny’s kids? If so, Gio may get a front-row seat to who his ‘Uncle’ Sonny really is soon — and it might leave them on the outs with one another permanently, regardless of their DNA.
