Things started out pleasant enough as Finn came home from his brother Harrison Chase’s (Josh Swickard) wedding to Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton).
He was accompanied by his father, Gregory Chase (Gregory Harrison) and his daughter Violet Barnes (Jophielle Love). Violet soon went to bed after wishing both her father and grandfather a good night.
Gregory and Finn had an emotional talk after Violet went to bed. They basically cleared the air between them and expressed their love for each other. Sadly took place soon after and Gregory died in his sleep from complications of ALS.
Finn knew he didn’t have much time left with father, but he still didn’t expect him to pass so suddenly, He was also harboring some amount guilt from accidentally taking a sip of champagne, potentially threatening his sobriety.
One sip turned into several glasses of bourbon the next day after Finn discovered his father’s body. Once Violet returned home from school, Finn gently told her about Gregory’s when Elizabeth Webber (Rebecca Herbst).
As soon as Elizabeth arrived, she was Finn’s glass and the bottle of bourbon. Although disappointed in Finn, her priority was to get Violet out of the apartment while Finn was drunk so he could go to a meeting and reclaim his sobriety.
Finn wasn’t having it and lashed out at Liz with an anger that stopped her in her tracks. Liz left, but called Finn’s brother, Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard) to help Finn through this time.
Eventually, Finn admitted to Chase that he had been drinking. He also had Chase throw the bourbon out and planned to go to an AA meeting.
Finn isn’t the most emotional character around, so it’s rare that Michael Easton gets to showcase his many talents. He got to explore every emotion this week with skill.
Beginning this week as a loving and gentle son with Gregory, through the sadness as despair Finn experience once he discovered Gregory was dead and finally ending the week with a scary intensity and then realization.
It’s rare for any character to experience so much in such a short time, and Easton each scene beautifully as he transitioned Finn’s difficult day.
Did Finn and Gregory’s final scenes touch you? Did you feel for Finn as he told Violet about Gregory? Did you feel the anger coming from Finn as he let loose on Elizabeth?
