Emma says ‘This role is just perfect in that aspect; it’s a blast and truly engaging-the layers and the variety of colors in Holly’s character are what make it so compelling.’
Hinting at the answer to the question, Samms shares, ‘I’m now working alongside a brilliant, strong, and intriguing villain, Sidwell (Carlos Rota) previewing fascinating twists as Holly makes her return.’ The representatives for the long-standing ABC series, led by executive producer Frank Valentini, are being typically discreet about Holly’s comeback.
They’ve mentioned that she will be collaborating with Jonathan Jackson, who is back as Lucky Spencer after his departure in 2015.
Despite their extensive time on the show—Samms joined in 1982 and Jackson in 1993—they have never had the chance to work together until this moment.”
Samms expresses her gratitude for the opportunity to work alongside Jonathan, stating, “Frank has truly given me a wonderful gift. Jonathan is undeniably a fantastic actor, but what stands out even more is his kindness.
We share a similar approach to our craft, which we discovered stems from our training under Tony Geary [Luke].” While Samms took on the role of Luke’s love interest after Laura’s disappearance, Jackson made his debut as the 11-year-old son of the beloved supercouple.
The idea of another woman capturing Luke’s heart could have sparked outrage among fans, yet Holly (and Samms) were warmly welcomed instead.
“I had no idea when I first joined that I was actually the third choice in the search for a new romantic partner for Luke,” she shares. “They had already considered some truly remarkable individuals, like Janine Turner and Demi Moore.
So, in a way, I was the last option; but being unaware of this was probably a blessing in disguise, as it allowed me to approach the role with a fresh perspective.
I came in with a sense of innocence, thinking, ‘I’ll give it my all, and somehow, it all worked out for me, and I feel incredibly lucky.” Holly’s journey has been filled with thrilling storylines, which is why she eagerly returns whenever asked.
She knows the fans adore her, and she feels grateful for their support. “They have shown me such kindness. This fanbase is incredibly passionate and caring, not just about the show, but about the actors as well.” Samms’ English accent added a unique charm that captivated fans.
However, Holly was originally crafted as an American character, which meant Samms had to adopt an American accent for her auditions.
“In my initial auditions, I used an American accent, but then [former executive producer] Gloria [Monty] heard my natural voice and asked, ‘Oh, are you English?’ “They revamped the storyline and my character and it was such a relief, because managing that amount of dialogue while also switching accents would have been incredibly stressful, to say the least.”
Samms has faced tough times recently due to long COVID, which has kept her from leaving London; her scenes in captivity by Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy) were filmed in her own bedroom.
“I’ve been dealing with this for almost four and a half years, and it’s confusing for both those affected and the doctors,” she explains. “Smart researchers are looking into it, but they keep discovering more damage caused by COVID to people’s bodies.
I had some thorough scans, and they revealed that I had myocarditis at some point, which has left scars on my heart,” Samms adds. “I believe we have only begun to understand the effects of COVID, and it worries me that many think the pandemic is over.”
People want to ignore the impact of COVID so badly that they act like it’s no longer a problem, but it really is-Samms worries about the potential for anti-masking laws.
“It’s shocking how anti-science this is because I am living proof that COVID has caused widespread disabilities. If the staff at ‘General Hospital’ weren’t so supportive, I wouldn’t be able to work. When I’m in the U.K. or not filming, I need to rest and elevate my feet; I have postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, which makes me faint if I stand for too long. The only way to feel better is to lie down flat.”
She elaborates, “The authorities at ‘General Hospital’ are quite accommodating in this regard, though not every production shares the same flexibility.
Most of my scenes are crafted with me seated, and they have thoughtfully assigned me a dressing room conveniently near the elevator. It’s the myriad of small considerations like these that enable me to perform my role effectively.”
Emma-and the powers that be at the show-haven’t disclosed exactly how long she’ll be around for this arc. Jonathan’s comeback is long-term, but Emma sounds like she’ll take all the GH work she can handle.
