Fans of the HBO drama series Euphoria will be relieved to hear that season 3 isn’t scrapped, just delayed.
While rumors swirl that the third season of Euphoria has been scrapped, HBO says it is “committed to making” new episodes. It’s just a matter of fans having to wait for the premiere of season 3.
HBO announces Euphoria season 3 shoot delayed
Euphoria fans might believe that season 3 has been canceled, but luckily, it hasn’t. HBO has announced a season 3 shoot delay, adding that it is “committed to making” new episodes in the meantime.
“HBO and Sam Levinson remain committed to making an exceptional third season,” an HBO spokesperson told Variety. “In the interim, we are allowing our in-demand cast to pursue other opportunities.”
Why the delay?
Reportedly, the scripts for the third season of Euphoria are still being written, with fans believing it had been canceled. Meanwhile, production had already been delayed, partly due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Moreover, the death in July 2023 of Angua Cloud, who played local drug dealer Fez, also hampered production.
Another delay is caused by the fact that the iconic drama series has launched most of its cast into the upper echelon of Hollywood, making it even harder to coordinate production schedules. Meanwhile, this relates to Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi and Hunter Schafter.
HBO confirmed in November 2023 that season 3 was set to premiere in 2025. This means there will be at least a three-year gap between seasons. Fans will recall that season 2 premiered in January 2022. This has led to rumors that season 3 will be set five years in the future.
For this reason, Elordi joked with Jimmy Fallon in January that season 3 would have to be set in the future, otherwise it would “seem like a weird bit,” adding:
I hope it’s soon, or they’re going to have to Benjamin Button me or something. I’m going to have a bad back walking down the hallway, you know?
About Euphoria and its cast
Euphoria follows Rue (Zendaya), a teen drug addict who struggles to stay sober and readjust to high school after rehab. Meanwhile, other cast includes Eric Dane, Maude Apatow, Alexa Demie, Storm Reid, Nika King, Colman Domingo (FWTD) and Austin Abrams.
Zendaya has won two Emmys for her performance in the series, which has faced backlash over its portrayal of drug use and sexual content.
While shooting of season 3 of Euphoria is delayed for now, HBO still hopes for a 2025 premiere.
