Days of Our Lives spoilers and updates reveal who the soap’s longest-running actor is. Suzanne Rogers has played Maggie Horton Kiriakis for over fifty years now; here’s all you need to know about Suzanne and Maggie.
Days Of Our Lives Spoilers – We Pay Tribute To Suzanne Rogers
For over fifty years, Suzanne Rogers has portrayed Maggie Horton Kiriakis, a farm girl who becomes a clever businesswoman while facing challenges.
Those have been challenges like paralysis, addiction, and even her own “murder” on Days of Our Lives. Throughout decades of drama, scheming, and betrayal, Suzanne has been a constant presence.
She is the longest-running actor on the show, which will celebrate its 15,000th episode on December 2, 2024, on Peacock. Her first appearance was on August 20, 1973.
DOOL Spoilers – Maggie Learned To Walk Again, Survived Attempted Murder
Maggie has learned to walk again, overcome her alcohol addiction, shot a drug dealer, survived an attack by the Salem Stalker, and even been buried alive.
She managed all this while taking care of her kids, dealing with multiple husbands, being a mother figure to others, and running several successful businesses.
Maggie was the character that introduced Rogers to viewers as a farm girl who lost her ability to walk after a car crash that took her parents’ lives. Mickey Horton, (John Clarke), was one of the main characters dealing with amnesia when he found himself on her farm.
He couldn’t remember his wife, Laura Horton (most recently Jaime Lyn Bauer) and soon developed feelings for Maggie.
Days Of Our Lives Spoilers – Mickey Gave Maggie A Pair Of Red Shoes
One of Rogers’ favorite plots involved Mickey encouraging her to regain her ability to walk by leaving a pair of red shoes at the hospital, motivating her to have surgery.
Rogers said, “The shoes made her believe she could walk by herself again one day; after Maggie’s surgery, she worried Mickey might leave her. But seeing the shoes showed her that he wanted her to recover-he promised to take her dancing in her red shoes.”
Maggie learned to walk again, and she and Mickey eventually got married after he got his memory back and sorted things out with his first wife. But even after that, Maggie had struggles-of many different kinds.
DOOL Spoilers: Maggie’s Struggles With Addiction
In the late 1970s, Maggie struggled with alcohol addiction while her adopted daughter Melissa Horton’s (Lisa Trusel) biological mother fought for custody. Her journey to sobriety led her to win a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in 1979.
That same year, her character Maggie got involved with a drug dealer after unknowingly selling canes that had cocaine hidden in them. When the dealer came to reclaim his drugs, she shot him with his own gun.
In 1984, Rogers left the show briefly due to a diagnosis of myasthenia gravis, a chronic autoimmune condition, but she returned the following year to continue playing Maggie.
Days Of Our Lives Spoilers – Ongoing Challenges For Maggie And Mickey
Maggie and Mickey faced difficulties when supervillain Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo) kidnapped Mickey and held him captive, while Maggie fell for another man.
They eventually came back together after Mickey escaped and she cared for him after he was shot. Although Maggie would later be interested in other men, Mickey remained her main love until he passed away in 2010.
In 2003, Maggie even survived a near-death experience-she, along with other popular characters, was targeted by The Salem Stalker, a dangerous killer eliminating residents of Salem.
However, the following year, it was revealed that Maggie and the other victims were alive on an island called Melaswen where they had been secretly kept.
DOOL Spoilers – After Melaswen
Rogers shared with TV Insider that she was surprised to learn about her character’s unexpected return. She found out during a meeting with executive producer Ken Corday months later, just before the “victims” were brought back to the rest of the cast.
“Everyone was shocked,” she recalled; “It was both surprising and thrilling.” After Mickey passed away, Maggie began a new relationship with Victor Kiriakis (John Aniston), a reformed bad boy from Salem.
At one point, Victor’s angry wife even buried Maggie alive, but Victor saved her-they eventually got married and stayed together until Victor’s death in 2023.
Days Of Our Lives – All About Suzanne
Suzanne Rogers is the longest-serving actor on Days of Our Lives, where she portrays Maggie Horton Kiriakis. “I can’t believe it’s been 50 years,” she shared with TV Insider last year about this achievement; “I’m honored and touched to still be on the show.”
Born as Suzanne Cecelia Crumpler, she adopted the name Suzanne Rogers to pay tribute to her inspiration, Ginger Rogers, who influenced her in film and dance, as noted in her biography.
Like Ginger, Rogers started her career as a dancer, joining the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall at just 17.
She also performed on Broadway in shows like Follies, Coco, and Hallelujah Boy before relocating to Los Angeles in 1973, when she auditioned and landed the pivotal role of Maggie.
DOOL Spoilers – Suzanne Talks About Joining The Soap
In 1974, she signed a contract without fully understanding what it meant, Rogers shared with The Spin Off in 2015. “I had experience in theater, musicals, and commercials, and I had done some nighttime shows, but nothing significant.”
To get a feel for soap operas, she began watching them; “I instantly fell in love with the genre; it was all about being on your toes,” she explained. “You need to focus, know exactly what you’re doing, deliver your lines quickly and accurately, and most importantly, be professional-it suited me perfectly.”
Days Of Our Lives Spoilers – Suzanne’s Celebration Of 50 Years On The Show Coincided With Victor’s Funeral
Victor’s funeral became a special episode to celebrate Rogers’ 50 years on the show. This episode, which aired on August 18, 2023, honored Maggie and the men she loved since she began her journey on the show fifty years ago.
Rogers shared her thoughts with The Spin Off about her long career in daytime drama after previously celebrating her 40-year milestone.
“I’m just happy to be part of such a wonderful organization,” she expressed; “I love my job, and I’m thrilled to receive a script every week. Now in her 51st year on the beloved soap, Rogers continues to bring her character to life with passion.
