Keeping in mind that the name Lilibet exists only because Queen Elizabeth the II existed, many people did not see it as the kind and thoughtful tribute Meghan and Harry paraded it as.
More evidence is coming out, which suggests that more than not being onboard with the idea of giving her childhood nickname to another child, the Queen felt quite upset about it.
It’s starting to seem that Prince Harry is living in a world where, if he says something happens, then he wants everyone to believe it or he threatens lawsuit.
The 39-year-old Duke and his team announced their daughter’s name on the Archewell website, writing: “Lili is named after her great-grandmother, Her Majesty The Queen, whose family nickname is Lilibet.”
When a Palace source revealed that no permission was sought for the name, Harry quickly rebuffed it.
They said at the time: “The duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement – in fact his grandmother was the first family member he called. During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honour.”
The statement concluded: “Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name.”
In fact, Harry was so sure the Palace would back him up he threatened to sue BBC, the outlet that first published the claims.
After the news came out that Harry and Meghan, 42, didn’t ask for the Queen’s blessings to name their child, Harry reached out to Buckingham Palace in hopes of securing their support. However, as we already know, this did not happen.
Writing in ‘Charles III: New King, New Court. The Inside Story,’ Robert Hardman said: “One privately recalled that Elizabeth II had been ‘as angry as I’d ever seen her’ in 2021 after the Sussexes announced that she had given them her blessing to call their baby daughter ‘Lilibet’, the Queen’s childhood nickname”.
“The couple subsequently fired off warnings of legal action against anyone who dared to suggest otherwise, as the BBC had done.
However, when the Sussexes tried to co-opt the Palace into propping up their version of events, they were rebuffed. Those noisy threats of legal action duly evaporated and the libel actions against the BBC never materialised.”
Lilibet is reportedly said to be the sound Queen Elizabeth made whenever she wants to say her name as a child.
