ABC has given a straight-to-series order to Ryan Murphy for a new series starring Joshua Jackson (Fatal Attraction, Dr. Death, Fringe) in the lead.

Moreover, Jackson will also executive produce the new series. Meanwhile, the new drama series is set for a launch in the fall and comes from 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television.

New ABC Series from Ryan Murphy starring Joshua Jackson

So far, and as usual with any Ryan Murphy series, few details of the synopsis of the series have been revealed. However, the title does suggest that Dr. Odyssey will be a medical procedural. Deadline quotes sources as saying it is set on a cruise ship. Moreover, that was the case with the latest season of Murphy’s procedural 9-1-1 when it debuted on ABC. Other hints say Jackson will play the title character, whose charms allow him to get what he wants.

Meanwhile, the ABC series is written and executive produced by Murphy with Joe Baken and Jon Robin Baitz. Murphy’s co-executive producers have collaborated with his work on several projects including Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans and American Horror Stories. Moreover, they are both collaborating on an upcoming Kim Kardashian legal drama and horror series, Grotesquerie.

More about the new ABC series

Dr. Odyssey is the first new ABC series order for Murphy since the showrunner reunited with Disney Entertainment co-chairman Dana Walden in 2023. At that time, he returned to his previous studio home at 20th Television, which is now part of ABC and Disney TV Studios.

Moreover, the showrunner’s first ABC series, 9-1-1, had six seasons on Fox, and got strong ratings, with the season 7 premiere drawing 8.85 million viewers after three days of launching on ABC, Hulu, and other digital platforms.

Meanwhile, Murphy has always been keen on classic procedural storytelling and is renowned for hits like Glee, Nip/Tuck, Monster, American Horror Story and its sequels. He is also keen to expand his presence in the genre beyond the hit 9-1-1 first responder franchise.  Due to this, another medical procedural on ABC would be a natural next step for Murphy as the series gains ground on streaming channels.

Ryan Murphy also recently announced a new horror series for TX dubbed Grotesquerie, starring Niecy Nash-Betts, Lesley Manville and Courtney B. Vance.

Other series coming soon from Ryan Murphy

Fans can also look forward to Disney’s release of season 2 of AHS: Delicate, starring Kim Kardashian and Emma Roberts which debuts on April 3. Moreover, Murphy has a second season of the horror drama, The Watcher, and the anthology series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, telling the story of the titular brothers, convicted for the murder of their parents in 1996.

Meanwhile, Joshua Jackson has recently starred in a Paramount+ Original series, Fatal Attraction, that was based on the 1987 movie of the same name. In the latter movie, he played Dan Gallagher, who was previously played in the movie by Michael Douglas. He has also played the role of a real-life serial killer, Dr. Christopher Duntsch, in the anthology series, Dr. Death on Peacock.
