After Michael Baldwin (Christian Le Blanc) departed Phyllis had a momentary daydream. In it, Diane Jenkins (Susan Walters) scolded her for being alive. That invention of Phyllis’ subconscious sparked the next chapter of this storyline.
For all the scheming Jeremy Stark (James Hyde) did during his life, he made missteps. One of them was underestimating Diane, who he used as his money laundering mule.
But Diane eventually learned what her assumed romantic connection was up to and provided states’ evidence. He was jailed for years before supposedly earning an early release for good behavior. If that was true, preference toward dangerous convicted criminals in the soapy justice system was reinforced.
Jeremy was lured to Genoa City, Wisconsin, by Phyllis. That nearly proved to be her fatal mistake. Viewers were not shown the fateful moment in the shady motel bathroom where Phyllis managed to defend her life by ending Jeremy’s as he was trying to kill her.
While Diane is all smiles when Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) is around, she scowls otherwise. Walters’ character projects a personality type that is incapable of recognizing all that she has and instead allows her mind to remain in a rut of anger for real, exaggerated, and imagined grudges.
No one is supporting Jack and Diane’s reunion except for their son, Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor). Even he has misgivings and does not have his head on straight after cheating on Summer Newman Abbott (Allison Lanier) because of her defense of Phyllis.
Diane has achieved what seemed improbable in obtaining Kyle’s quick forgiveness, Jack asking for her hand in what would be a first-time marriage to him, and in gaining an executive position at Jabot. Yet, she still is not satisfied, and that angle is one Phyllis can work.
Phyllis did everything imaginable to make Jack see the daytime light. But he was taken by Diane’s story, where she claimed instability caused her to fake being murdered.
Diane could not be taken down by words said or actions taken against her. So, Phyllis is recalculating. She needs to use Diane’s proven penchant for creating chaos against her.
Viewers likely feel that Phyllis’ resolve will result in a different outcome, with Diane at least being neutralized if not going down on Y&R.
