Y&R spoilers note that Yolanda will return to GC on Friday, May 5th. Lawson notes that she first heard about a possible comeback to the show from her onscreen son, Bryton James. James reached out via an Instagram message. He started off with, “Hey Mom”, going on to say that the soap was celebrating its 50th-anniversary celebration, and he recommended that they bring Devon’s mother back.
Lawson tells SOD that she was quite excited at the thought of being back on the show. While Momma Hamilton had a stint on the Y&R back in 2011, the role was played by actress Debbi Morgan (All My Children’s Angela Baxter Hubbard), Chene hasn’t been on the daytime drama since 2005. She reveals that she said “yes” off the bat; she loved her time on the series and thought it would be “wonderful” to revisit the character as well as her old Y&R family.
Lawson admits to SOD that she was nervous, anxious, and a tad overwhelmed that first day on set. She notes that she hadn’t seen Bryton since 2006, and she broke down when she saw him. She explains that a bit of it was that she knew she wouldn’t see Kristoff St. John (Neil Winters) by his side (as was the last time she was on set), and a little bit of her got emotional seeing Bryton after all this time.
Her first scene also happens to be Neil’s memorial, and Lawson notes that she was “thankful” she could be there as she wasn’t around for Mr. Winters’s original memorial.
Lawson tells SOD that actor Shemar Moore was also on set that day, which made things easier for her, as well. After all, he too, is set to reprise his Malcolm Winters role in early May. Chene notes that the two attended scene study classes together for years, so it was good to be reunited with him. It had also been about 18 years since she had seen Moore.
She was also happy to share the set with actress Christel Khalil (Lily Winters), whom she never had the opportunity to meet. After all, while Harmony was in town in 2005, she was played by another actress. Lawson reveals to SOD that Christel is a “comic” who had her cracking up on set the entire time she was there.
Lawson shares that her Yolanda character has successfully stayed away from drugs and is now made a career of serving others in the community. Chene tells SOD that Ms. Hamilton has taken her awful life experiences and turned them into a way to help people. She also notes that while Yolanda’s return may ruffle some feathers – looking at you, Tucker McCall (Trevor St. John) – she truly has the best of intentions. With that said, it sounds like Lawson’s run on the Y&R will be a short one, this time around; however, Chene reveals to SOD that she’s “always” available to bring back Ms. Hamilton whenever they need her.
