Speaking of her role in the movie, Ellie Kemper explained that Helen is disillusioned with life. Moreover, she told Entertainment Weekly, “I liked that Helen is a grump.”

The Bridesmaids actress continued, “She’s a little pessimistic. She’s going through a really tough time and she doesn’t really believe in the goodness of things.”

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt star said it felt like the role would be fun to play because it is so different from the “optimistic, funny, bright-eyed women” she has played in the past.

“I wasn’t intentionally speaking up for something like that, but once I read this script, I thought, ‘Oh, this is, this is really interesting to me.’”

About the chemistry with co-star Luke Grimes

Meanwhile, Grimes is miles away from wearing a cowboy hat and riding a horse on the range. Even when just watching the trailer for Happiness For Beginners, it is clear that Ellie and Luke have great chemistry.

“With Luke, we did all these chemistry reads and he was great from the start,” she said, adding, “He’s not only a phenomenal actor, but he’s really laid back and low-key in real life.”

Speaking at Tudum, the movie’s director, Vicky Wight, also spoke of the lead stars’ chemistry, saying: “The cast was an absolute dream and they all became good friends during our shoot.

“Not only did everyone shine individually but each actor was an exceptionally generous and inventive scene partner.”

Wright continued, saying, “They were improvisational and trusting with one another and me, which added so much chemistry on-screen.”

As can be seen from the trailer included below, Happiness For Beginners is a fun romp out in beautiful nature on the Appalachian Trail.

Happiness for Beginners is streaming on Netflix right now.
