Apparently, it’s official. Kevin Costner, who plays John Dutton on the modern Western show Yellowstone won’t appear in the final episodes. According to news reports, there has been a feud between Costner and the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan. In fact, the Daily Mail quotes court documents as saying that the actor “doesn’t anticipate being on location for at least the rest of 2023.” Meanwhile, part 2 of Yellowstone season 5 starts filming at some stage in August. This clearly means that John Dutton will not return.
Kevin Costner to skip final episodes of Yellowstone
It was previously confirmed that Kevin Costner would return as John Dutton for the final episodes of the Paramount drama, Yellowstone. However, court documents from his divorce proceedings make it look like the Dancing With Wolves actor won’t be back to film the final episodes.
As reported by the Daily Mail, due to the ongoing WGA Writers’ strike, many series are paused in their production for the upcoming season, with no end in sight. While it is believed that Costner won’t appear, depending on when filming can restart, the Bodyguard actor could be able to take part. However, as of today, nothing has been confirmed.
Court documents reveal Costner won’t return
While the hit modern Western series films in Montana, Costner’s court documents state that he isn’t planning to leave California for the balance of 2023. Readers will recall that Deadline previously reported that the actor wanted to film for only one week for part 2 of season 5. This news came after he cut short his filming schedule during part 1 of the final season of Yellowstone.
Nothing has yet been confirmed about Costner’s involvement in the final episodes, but should the WGA Writers’ strike not end this summer, Yellowstone could very well not resume filming in August. Unfortunately, Yellowstone fans will have to adopt a wait-and-see attitude about the final episodes of season 5.
However, in the meantime, all five seasons so far are currently streaming on Peacock to keep fans happy for a while. While this doesn’t replace having John Dutton in the final episodes, it does allow fans to do a catch-up on the series and for newbies to the show to finally find out what the fuss is all about.
