Yellowstone Boss Taylor Sheridan Teases Details Of Matthew McConaughey Spinoff

After all the hoo-hah surrounding Yellowstone and Kevin Costner, and while fans await the final episodes of season 5, Taylor Sheridan opens up about the future of the franchise. When part 2 of season 5 drops in November, fans will get to see the final moments of John Dutton and his family at the iconic ranch. Meanwhile, as previously reported, Hollywood icon Matthew McConaughey will be starring in a new Yellowstone spinoff.

As recently reported, Matthew McConaughey is set to star in a spinoff and Taylor Sheridan has opened up on how this will affect the Yellowstone franchise. Sheridan opened up about McConaughey to The Hollywood Reporter about the Dazed and Confused alum joining the gang. It turns out Sheridan and McConaughey have been discussing the project for longer than we realize.

“[Matthew] seems like a natural fit,” Taylor said, adding, “We had a few conversations over the years, and spitballed a few ideas. Then he started watching Yellowstone and responded to it. He was like, ‘I want to do that.’ And by ‘that’ he meant diving into a raw world clashing up against the modern world. And then I said, ‘Buddy, that we can do.’”

Possible storyline for Matthew McConaughey spinoff

As to McConaughey’s role in the Yellowstone universe, Sheridan didn’t give much detail. However, he did give a few hints on the subject. Basically, the new spinoff will focus on a new cast and in a different setting.

Meanwhile, Taylor also said that while he doesn’t have the entire idea of the series yet, McConaughey’s series will be along similar lines to the prequel shows, 1883 and 1923. The Yellowstone co-creator said:

There are lots of places where a way of life that existed for 150 years is slamming against a new way of life, but the challenges are completely different. There are a lot of places you can tell this story.

While Sheridan won’t give much detail on the ongoing Yellowstone universe, it is possible that McConaughey will star with some familiar faces from the original show. In fact, Deadline reported in May that several actors had received offers to transition to the new series.

As fans know, 1883 and 1923 were both successful Yellowstone spinoffs and with as great an actor as Matthew McConaughey in the cast, the new spinoff will surely be successful too.
