In case you are getting nervous about the WGA strike and its potential effect on The Walking Dead spinoffs, fear not. It has been officially confirmed that the writers’ strike will have no effect on spinoffs like Dead City and Daryl Dixon, as well as Fear The Walking Dead season 8.
Now that the mothership show, The Walking Dead, is over, fans are eagerly looking forward to the new spinoffs coming to AMC. These include The Walking Dead: Dead City and Daryl Dixon, as well as the upcoming eighth season of Fear The Walking Dead.
Reportedly, there will be no delays to the shows by the Writers Guild of America’s ongoing strike. In fact, The Wrap quotes an AMC spokesperson as confirming that ongoing projects in the TWD franchise, slated to air on AMC during 2023 and 2024, will not be affected by the strike.
Fear The Walking Dead fans can still look forward to the eighth and final season of Fear the Walking Dead premiering on May 14. Meanwhile, The Walking Dead: Dead City, with Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan will still drop on June 18. Moreover, the Daryl Dixon spinoff, led by Norman Reedus is still filming in Paris and will still premiere later this year. Other good news relates to the Rick and Michonne untitled miniseries, which is still set to air in 2024.
The Writers Guild of America strike started on May 2, after negotiations failed with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Meanwhile, this is the WGA’s first strike in 15 years. The most recent strike was in 2007 and went on for 100 days, affecting a number of shows and movies. These included X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Quantum of Solace.
The thought of our favorite shows going off the air for another potential 100 day stint is truly worrying to fans of shows that are affected. However, besides The Walking Dead franchise, work on House of the Dragon season 2 and Andor season 2 will also not be hit by the strike.
Executive Producer Scott M. Gimple had previously spoken about the future of The Walking Dead franchise. At that time, he confirmed that projects are currently in development. However, while some feature the original cast, it could be a possibility that a new batch of protagonists could appear.
Gimple said, “This year is about focusing on these classic character shows, but also, we’re still wrapping up [spinoff series] Fear the Walking Dead.” However, he added that there are other projects that have been on the burner and they are starting to get the next phase going.
