While fans are already looking forward to season 2 of the popular HBO series, The Last of Us, creators have more good news.

As fans of the HBO hit series know, The Last of Us is an adaptation of the action-adventure, survival horror game franchise of the same name. As the season 1 finale dropped, viewers have been left longing for more and it was good news when the show was renewed in January for season 2. However, that isn’t the last of the good news, as season 2 won’t cover everything from part 2 of the video game, but will rather lead to multiple episodes.

About HBO’s The Last of Us

A little unnervingly, the TV series is set in 2023, 20 years into a pandemic caused by a fungal infection that transforms its hosts into zombie-like creatures. In season 1 of the TV series, Pedro Pascal plays Joel, a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across the post-apocalyptic US.

The creators of the series officially renewed it for season 2 in January, but it turns out that won’t be the last. The Last of Us Part 2 was released on PlayStation 4 in 2020, some seven years after part 1 of the game debuted. Meanwhile, the second part is set to tell a much larger and complex story that the original game. In fact, there will be more characters, action set pieces and flashbacks in season 2.

How many more seasons of the HBO show?

Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the creators of the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us, told GQ that the events of part 2 of the game will span more than one season. Moreover, when asked if season 2 of the series will cover the entire part 2, Mazin said, “No. No way.” Meanwhile, Druckmann added, “It’s more than one season.”

The creators didn’t want to give much away about how many seasons will be released to cover the story. GQ presumed the creators wouldn’t reveal how many seasons will follow. In fact, Mazin said, “You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct.”

Who will stay in season 2 of The Last of Us?

The second season will feature a number of the core characters from the first part, including Joel (Pedro Pascal). Ellie (Bella Ramsey, Tommy (Gabriel Luna), Maria (Rutina Wesley) will also return for season 2. However, there will be a number of new characters including Abby, played by Laura Bailey. She actually had a cameo in the finale episode on Sunday, as one of the nurses in the operating room of the Salt Lake City hospital, where Ellie is to undergo surgery.

Meanwhile, another nurse joins her and they are both horrified when Joel barges into the operating room. He kills the head surgeon and escapes back to Jackson with Ellie. What is shocking is that her immunity to the deadly cordyceps fungus could have provided a cure. However, by having the operation, she would die. This led Joel to choose Ellie’s life over that of humanity.

While the creators have teased further series, HBO has not yet officially confirmed anything past season 2. However, Mazin and Druckman did say there would be more action to come. After criticism from viewers on the lack of major action set pieces in the first season, Mazin said there is much more to come. In fact, he said it is possible there will be many more infected people later, including the possibility of different kinds of infected people.

When can we expect season 2?

According to Vulture, season 1 started filming in July 2021 and premiered on HBO in January 2023. If season 2 follows a similar timeline, season 2 could drop in the fall of 2024 at the earliest. However, Druckman did note that working with season 2, he is finding the process is easier. This means that possibly the season will come out sooner.
