The one Polygamous family of four wives, eighteen children, and one husband is now a monogamous family of one wife, one husband, and of course his eighteen children. Is this the case of how the mighty have fallen? Well, in an exclusive interview with “PEOPLE” Kody Brown shared how he has been coping with his last wife standing Robyn in a new territory (monogamy).
For over three decades, Kody has been in a plural marriage but things fell apart when his third wife Christine Brown divorced him in November 2021. Christine’s divorce from Kody opened the door to two more divorces as his second wife Janelle followed suit the next year December 2022, and the following month January 2023, his first wife Meri did the same.
Being in a single marriage was never Kody’s plan but since things took a different turn, the TLC patriarch had no choice but to reluctantly adapt. Speaking with PEOPLE, Kody, 54, revealed he and Robyn, 45, are dealing with it. “We’re still in a deep state of mourning, if you will. We are not recovering from this.” He went on to say that the situation left him and Robyn “a bit depressed” while adding, “We’ve been through a very hard experience and our reaction to it has changed us. We are not the same.”
The Patriarch of the Brown family went ahead to tell the outlet, “Moving forward is still one of those things where you go through a divorce, you almost feel like God doesn’t exist, and you’re so angry, so bitter, and … you need to let some sunshine back in. That’s the thing. I think we’re just in a transitionary point where I am letting sunshine back in.”
The reality TV star said that while he and his ex-wives are not in the same place mentally, they all should seek happiness. His reason is that it’ll be unrealistic to break up because you’re unhappy, just to remain unhappy afterward. It’ll only bring regret. “If we are breaking up and we don’t continue seeking happiness and go out and find that happiness, then the breakup was never a benefit, then you’re living with regret.”
Looking back at how his first divorce left him full of anger, he told the outlet, “As time progresses and I move out of the anger phase of that experience, I find myself going, ‘Yes, you need your happiness and you weren’t happy,’ It was making me unhappy. We go through this terribly unhappy part, and then we move to happiness. If she’s happy, then I’ll be happy. That’s just it.”
He went on to add, “It’s like there’s doubt and you wonder and you think, ‘Is this right to break up?’ If everybody finds happiness afterwards, then we’ll know that it was just a part of life, just transitioning to a new space.”
