These days when we hear climate change and environmental preservation, we think using less energy, using less plastic, cutting down on our travel rates, and other things like that.
And not to say that these practices aren’t wonderful, but Prince William believes there’s a better way to tackle climate change.
This is the reason he launched Earthshot Prize: an awards program that recognizes ideas aimed at cleaning the air, protecting and restoring nature, building a waste-free world and others.
His approach is that we can find better means to get our energy, instead of worrying about cutting down on energy use.
Ahead of Prince William’s buzzed about trip to Singapore in November, a Kensington Palace source released details about the reason William founded the £50 million environmental awards prize.
“The Eartshot Prize is about finding innovative solutions that are going to help scale and change the future direction of planet, and what he or the Earthshot Prize will never do, is tell people not to get on planes and not to get in their cars,” the spokesperson said of the awards show that is now in its third year.
They continued: “We’re not looking back to the Ice Age, we’re looking forward to the Green Age. It’s really important that instead of focusing on prevention, we can actually focus on the opportunity.”
This was especially notable because it came days after Harry and Meghan took the stage to address the impact of climate change on mental health.
In 2019, Harry defended his use of private jets, by saying that “99%” of his travels have been on commercial flights and that he only uses it for security reasons.
Another person who has drawn criticism for his use of helicopters and private jets is King Charles himself, who has been a champion of conservation long before it became cool to be.
Just last summer, it was revealed that King Charles – then Prince Charles – took 20 private flights, including several helicopters, within the UK in 2021 in order to avoid being stuck in traffic. Even a spokesperson admitted it was rather tricky to entirely justify his needs to take private flights.
“That is tricky,” a senior royal source said, adding “You only get to use the helicopter if every other option has failed. But there are just some days where you’ve got to be in place A at this time and place B at that time. And as we all know, driving around the country in our cars, you hit traffic.”
