Penn Badgley’s character Joe has given up killing after he takes up a new job. This comes after three seasons of the Netflix thriller have featured his murderous ways. Meanwhile, the series showrunner, Sera Gamble reveals that Joe’s job is partly why he has stopped his evil ways as we get closer to the premiere of season 4.
You showrunner, Sera Gamble has explained why Joe Goldberg has given up his murderous ways in the upcoming season 4 of the thriller series. The Netflix crime drama first dropped on the streamer in 2018. In the series, Penn Badgley plays protagonist Joe Goldberg, a dangerously charming character who goes to dangerous ends to connect with those people he takes a keen interest in.
The series You was created by Gamble and producer Greg Berlanti. Meanwhile, the show also features Charlotte Ritchie, Tati Gabrielle, Lukas Gage and Stephen Hagan in its large cast.
In an interview shared by Netflix, Sera Gamble opens up on why Joe is done with killing in season 4 of You. Following the finale of season 3, Joe headed to Europe with a new identity to get a fresh start and create a future for himself.
Meanwhile, as season 4 begins, Joe is teaching American Literature in London, a fitting profession for the former serial killer. Gamble said:
Finally, he’s in a position that befits his level of understanding of the books he talks about all the time. He’s genuinely good at it and it’s a pleasure for him to do it. I can say this without spoiling too much: Even when his life is completely falling apart, he still does enjoy teaching class. It’s fun to put someone who knows literary tropes into one of the tropiest stories possible, and it fits nicely with the idea that he’s genuinely going to be different now.
The showrunner added that Joe is “done murdering” and has learned from his past mistakes. Now, he’s going to do what it takes to right the “karmic scales,” adding:
He’s done murdering, he’s learned from his mistakes and he’s going to do what it takes to right the karmic scales. That doesn’t just mean grow a beard and teach about American literature, it also means maybe that you have to try to protect the very people [whose fate] previously would’ve had you at least look the other way, if not actively participate in what was going on with them.
As You fans know so well, season 3 of the series was yet another wild ride for Joe. Meanwhile, all his past actions have blown up in his face, forcing him to go to drastic lengths to continue his life. Readers will recall that Joe murdered his wife, Love Quinn and gave his baby away. He then faked his own death, taking on a new persona as Jonathan Moore before heading across the pond to England.
As it gets closer to the premiere of You season 4, a number of teasers have already been revealed. Along with the interview, a six-minute teaser has been posted for episode 1 of season 4. Fans will note that much of the footage is flashbacks to season 3 and what led Joe to move to London. However, it does also offer a fresh look at the opening scene.
In the teaser, Joe has already started comfortably living her new life as a professor, teaching a course on American Iconoclasts of the Short Story. Amusingly, Joe’s teaching methods essentially let his students argue among themselves while he observes.
Meanwhile, Joe’s inner monolog has returned in season 4 and chatters on about the differences between America and London. Moreover, this particularly relates to the respect given to reading and literature in England’s capital. From the 6-minute clip, Joe is unusually happy with his lot. However, naturally, the series wouldn’t be You if nothing got out of hand.
Readers can watch the 6-minute Tudum teaser on Netflix’s website here. In the meantime, we also include a shorter teaser trailer for season 4.
Meanwhile, You season 4, part 2, streams on February 9, while part 2 is set to start on March 9 on Netflix.
