The Paramount Network series Yellowstone will come to an end later this year and in its place, a new related spinoff is set to air. Hollywood actor Matthew McConaughey is set to lead the new series and recently spoke about Kevin Costner’s role in the mothership series. He spoke of what men will do to protect their land and their family.

Matthew McConaughey joins the Yellowstone universe

As part 2 of season 5 of Yellowstone brings the series to an end in November, Oscar-winning Hollywood star, Matthew McConaughey will return to acting in a new spinoff of the original show. So far, details about the new series are scarce, but the actor opened up in a recent interview on the Lex Fridman Podcast. McConaughey went on to speak about the appeal of Yellowstone and its lead star, Kevin Costner.

“I admire the simplicity of it. One way you could explain ‘Yellowstone’ and Costner’s role is what will men do to protect land and family in a world that is trying to encroach?” he said, adding, “In a world where there’s a cowboy ethos that deems trespassing more clear earlier than other hats. I admire that simplicity of right and wrong.”

Speaking of that moral code, Fridman pointed out that the show doesn’t always abide by the law, to which Matthew responded, saying, “No, it’s above the law.”

Moreover, he explained, “It’s a little bit of, ‘If the law ain’t handling this, I am.’ And then it is, ‘The law’s not going to handle it, therefore I am.’ Then it’s, ‘I’m handling this. The law? Talk to them when you get to them. I’m handling this.’

Paramount Media Networks President and CEO Chris McCarthy confirmed to Hollywood Reporter in April that the Dazed and Confused actor was lined up for a new show within the Taylor Sheridan Yellowstone universe.

Meanwhile, the original Yellowstone series ends after part 2 of season 5 airs at some time in November 2023. The finale of the series comes after filming delays and rumored behind-the-scenes drama with series star Costner.

While McConaughey shared no further specifics about his upcoming role in the new series, he did speak at length with Fridman about several other topics, including his Texas pride, saying:

Texas is about independence. Politically, Texas is not about Republican or Democrat, it’s about independence. Independence of spirit, sovereignty.

Moreover, the Dallas Buyers Club star explained that Texas is about exploration. He said one of the things he loves about the state is that he has run into so many Texans around the world, saying “Texans are taught… learn who we are and go. Go! Explore! Pioneer! Journey!” McConaughey added, “And hopefully you come on back with some goods and some stories.”

The Hollywood actor considered a run for governor of Texas in 2022 but ultimately decided against it so he could focus on being a parent. Speaking to Chelsea Handler on the iHeartPodcast, Dear Chelsea earlier this year, he said he didn’t think that was where he could be the “most useful” right now. McConaughey explained why:

I’m having too good of a time. I’ve got three kids – 14, 13, 10 – and the adventures we’re going on, I’m not going to get them again; and right now, I’m enjoying being a dad, a family man.

Why he added that everyone says it, it is true, and he has seven more years before his children are out on their own. The Dark Tower actor added:

Everyone says, ‘Get what you can while they’re in the house because it doesn’t come back.’
