The series follows the 35-year relationship between earnest and optimistic Tim Laughlin, played by Jonathan Bailey, and the charismatic, but intimacy-avoiding Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller, played by Matt Bomer.

The series begins with their first meeting during the McCarthy era in the 50s, through to the AIDS epidemic of the 80s.

According to the official IMDb page for the series, it follows the lives and volatile romance of two different men, through purges, wars, protests, and plagues, while overcoming obstacles in the world.

Other principal cast members include Will Brill as Roy Cohn, Andy Milne as Andre, Erin Neufer as Mary Johnson and Jane Moffat as Helen.

‘Uncharted territory for mainstream’ TV

As Vanity Fair teased in June 2023, the intimate scenes between Tim and Hawk will mark “uncharted territory for mainstream” television. At that time, executive producer Robbie Rogers said:

Not that it will be shocking to people, but I hope when people watch it, they’re like, ‘Oh, wow. They really went for it.’

Meanwhile, Bailey added: “I will be so interested to see how people respond to it. To me, being queer also is about, as two men, how you negotiate your giving of your body to the other person,” adding, “That is something that I’ve always yearned to see properly done because I know how extraordinary it is to experience it.”
