King Charles, at 74, is still perfectly capable of catching himself when he trips over. I’m pretty sure that that particular scene would have made the day of some memers; the King almost falling over on artificial grass and then putting on his sunglasses and calmly moving on.
The visit was Charles’ first Commonwealth travel since becoming the reigning monarch, and he took the opportunity to address the heinous crimes committed by the British empire in the past.
On Nov. 1, King Charles visited the Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s Kariokor cemetery, in Nairobi, Kenya with his wife Queen Camilla.
As he was guided from one patch of artificial grass to the next, his shoe snagged on one of them and he almost fell in front of the dozens of military men.
Queen Camilla reacted by reaching out and trying to grab him, but he quickly recovered his stance and continued to move on. Later on during the visit, he revealed that he feels great sorrow and deep regret about Britain’s “abhorrent and unjustifiable acts of violence” in Kenya.
He added that the actions were unjustifiable, going on to add that he’s glad they’ve moved past the pain for the countries to become friends.
“However, we must also acknowledge the most painful times of our long and complex relationship. The wrongdoings of the past are a cause of the greatest sorrow and the deepest regret.”
Remembering the war crimes committed by the British against Kenyans as they struggled to gain independence and sovereignty from the British empire, Charles admitted that there were no excuses to be made for their past actions.
President William Ruto of Kenya praised Charles for displaying “exemplary courage” in confronting the mistakes of the past.
However, he did note that “much remains to be done in order to achieve full reparations” to make up for the monstrous cruelty Britain displayed at that time.
