Justified: City Primeval Premiere Features NSFW Reference To Yellowstone

Tuesday this week saw the return of Timothy Olyphant in the miniseries, Justified: City Primeval on FX. Some fans may have noted the NSFW call-out to Kevin Costner and Yellowstone during that episode. Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time Justified has aired a reference to the hit modern Western series. Read on to find out more, but be warned, there are spoilers ahead.

Justified: City Primeval gives nod to Yellowstone and Kevin Costner

Fans were no doubt thrilled to see the return of the Timothy Olyphant series Justified on Tuesday. However, sharper fans may have noticed something NSFW and rather funny in the episode. In fact, the FX show made an unusual and rather rude reference to that other modern Western series, Yellowstone.

Fans will recall that the original Justified series ran for six seasons on FX and now, eight years later, has returned with a limited sequel. Once again, Timothy Olyphant plays the lead role of US Marshall Raylan Givens.

While previously, Givens was fighting crime in eastern Kentucky with a cowboy hat on his head, things have changed. He now finds himself in the big city streets of Detroit, while still fighting crime.

The fact that Givens rocked a cowboy hat in the series is one of several reasons why Justified has been compared with Yellowstone. As fans know, the show is about the Dutton family, led by Kevin Costner, and playing dirty to protect his Montana ranch.

During Tuesday’s premiere episode, Raylan and his daughter Willa – played by Olyphant’s real-life daughter, Vivian Olyphant – are enjoying dinner together at a restaurant. Meanwhile, across the restaurant is a defense attorney by the name Carolyn (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) and her friend Diane (Regina Taylor).

Suddenly, Diane spots Raylan looking over at Carolyn and drops this classic line:

There’s a guy across the room staring at you. You ever seen Yellowstone? I would f*** the s*** out of Kevin Costner.

Naturally, Raylan was sporting his cowboy hat as he always does, which is similar to one that John Dutton wears. However, fans may feel the line was out of place, especially with the major drama over Yellowstone and Costner.

Anyone that was watching closely as the NSFW line dropped might believe there is a bond forming between Raylan and Carolyn. This may just have been a nod to an eventual romantic relationship between the pair.

Previous nod to Kevin Costner

Tuesday’s episode of Justified isn’t the first reference relating to Costner. As noted by Yahoo! Entertainment, there was a related exchange in episode 11 of season 2. In that episode, fellow marshal Tim Gutterson (Jacob Pitts) quotes a line from the film The Bodyguard, featuring Costner and Whitney Houston. However, when he quotes the line, Raylan gets confused, leading to Gutterson saying, “It’s from the movie. She asks Costner to hand her her jacket.”

Whether the Justified powers that be love Kevin Costner or are Yellowstone fans themselves is unknown. However, fans of both shows probably enjoyed the latest nod to Costner in Justified: City Primeval.
