After season 19 ended with Ellen Pompeo’s Dr. Meredith Grey making a show, fans are wondering what Grey’s Anatomy will be like without her. Let’s face it, Pompeo’s character has been central to the show since the premiere of season 1. Admittedly, due to other projects, she only made a few appearances throughout the latest season. While fans miss her, how does the actress feel now that the latest season is over?
After season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy ended, Variety wanted to know what frustrated Ellen Pompeo about her long-running character in the hit hospital drama. As fans know, Pompeo has played the role of Dr. Meredith Grey since the very start of season 1. Throughout the seasons, her character has been central to the story and even when missing from the latest season, still narrated each episode.
Fans have seen Ellen’s character from being an intern to her success as a surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial. However, due to another project, Meredith was seen only sparsely during season 19. Viewers hardly saw her until she made an appearance in the season 19 finale.
While fans miss Meredith, what does Pompeo feel about her role and what won’t she miss from playing her role?
In an interview with Variety, Pompeo revealed one key element of her role that frustrated her about Meredith. She pointed out that despite having multiple love interests throughout the show, Meredith’s relationship skills were lacking. This is one aspect that the actress says she doesn’t miss dealing with.
When asked about Meredith’s latest relationship with Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), Ellen said:
“Oh no, I’ve been on the show so long, I’m happy to let that go. We’re past that point. I think it’s OK for Meredith to stop making bad decisions,” she said, adding:
One of my frustrations is the Nick and Meredith of it all. Scott Speedman plays Meredith’s love interest, Nick Marsh, and I love Speedman. Somehow, Meredith can’t figure out how to make a relationship work, still, after all this time. I felt so happy to be able to step away, and I felt like I accomplished something incredible. Everywhere, as I’m sure everywhere you go, people just run up to me and say, ‘I love you!’ It’s weird and strange, but it’s just love coming at me.
Right at the start of the series, we saw Meredith in her most prominent relationship with her husband, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey). To fans, he was Dr. McDreamy, and in his relationship with Meredith, they shared three children. However, after he was killed in a car accident in season 11, Meredith was alone and eventually jumped from one handsome man to another.
Among her many short-term relationships, one was Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson), who left after season 14. Next in line was the handsome Andrew DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti), who was killed off in season 17.
Meanwhile, Meredith’s latest relationship was with Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), who she is still with, at least offscreen. Currently, it is unclear whether she will still be with Nick on her likely return in season 20.
While Pompeo will likely return in season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy, it seems she has had enough of being the center of the major storylines on the show. She now seems happy to let Meredith be less of a regular character while returning now and then. Hopefully, the fresh interns that have joined the hospital will have what it takes to keep Grey’s Anatomy alive, with or without Meredith Grey.
