Spencer isn’t strategizing very well though. In fact, he’s doing a pretty poor job at convincing Esme that he’s on her side when he can’t seem to refrain from taking potshots at her and reminding her that her choices aren’t in the best interest of her child — insisting he could do it better.
Is Esme really all that uneasy about Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy), or is that just something she told Laura Collins (Genie Francis) to dupe her into thinking they were on the same page? It’s quite clear how Laura feels about Victor; Esme could figure it out even without having any memory of what happened in the past.
However, if she is unnerved by Victor, it’s going to be a tough sell for him to get her to trust him enough to rely on him. What’s worse: trusting Laura, or relying on Victor? In a perfect world, Esme wouldn’t need any of these people. Maybe she thinks she can get by on her own without their help, but the petty cash Laura left her won’t get her through the night in a city like Port Charles.
Esme isn’t going anywhere — yet. Victor intends to see to it that she’s not around for long though. He might be buttering his nephew up and acting like he’s about to come to his rescue, but Victor has other plans in store for the Cassadines — whom he wants to regain control over.
He may not know where Nikolas Cassadine (Adam Huss) is right now, but he imagines he can smoke him out should he gain custody of his child. Meanwhile, Spencer will think Victor is working on his behalf when he’s actually working against him and using Spencer for cover.
Ultimately, Spencer is going to pay a pretty steep price for having asked his sinister uncle to come on board and help him get Ace away from Esme. From where Victor sits, the easiest way to do that and make sure Esme stays out of the picture is to have her snuffed out entirely. When Esme is killed, custody won’t be such a big issue for Spencer.
But is he going to feel kosher about taking Esme’s son after she’s dead — because of him? When he laments to his uncle that he never asked him to kill Esme, Victor will remind Spencer he only came to him for help because he knew he would do “whatever it takes” to get the job done. The guilt that hangs over Spencer following Esme’s death is going to cause him to spiral and soon he won’t be any more fit to raise his baby brother than she was.
