Now, another setback is going to saddle Nina with so much remorse and regret. Will she ever be able to forgive herself for the things she has said and done to Willow? How can she possibly say goodbye?
When Willow first came to Port Charles, she got a job at Charlotte Cassadine’s (Amelie McLain) school as her teacher. It was there that Nina and Willow first crossed paths, when Nina was still married to Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) — Charlotte’s father. Acting as her stepmother was a role Nina took very seriously, never having been able to have a mother-daughter relationship with her own child.
Willow preyed on that and took jabs as the opportunity to arose, but Nina wasn’t innocent either. They both despised one another and their relationship never really bounced back from the rocky foundation it was built upon — where Willow thought of Nina as less than an adequate mother, and Nina felt Willow wasn’t fit to be around her child.
My how the tables have turned. Today, Willow doesn’t think Nina is fit to be around her children, and Nina thinks the world of Willow as a mother — now that she knows she’s her daughter, that is. Before learning that, Nina was begging a judge to grant her visitation with her grandchild even when his mother and father were firmly against it.
It wasn’t a good look for her on the heels of having kept Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) at bay in Nixon Falls, allowing his entire family to grieve his alleged death. She and Willow have never come back from that misstep on Nina’s part either.
Now, they both know they’re mother and daughter, yet neither of them really feel like it. Nina’s heart calls to Willow, but the connection isn’t there. Any semblance of it seems awkward for Willow, who is far less open to the idea of forging one at all. That’s all about to change as Willow faces yet another setback with her health.
When it looks like the bone marrow transplant isn’t going to be the life-saving measure the family had hoped for, Willow will be forced to come to terms with this being the end of her life. She’s selfless enough to know she doesn’t want to leave Nina behind wondering if she was good enough, tried hard enough, or if Willow knew she loved her.
