General Hospital Writers ‘Hate’ Losing Control Of Plots Amid Strike

A new report reveals that soap opera writers must make a tough decision during the Writers Guild Of America (WGA) strike. And one General Hospital writer even went online to share the struggle. As a result of the WGA strike, temporary writers will pen soap operas like General Hospital.

Find out what a General Hospital writer shared about the situation. And learn when non-WGA member writers will take over the plots and characters of GH. Get all the details below.

General Hospital Spoilers – Writers ‘Face Conflict’ Amid Strike

Many soap opera writers “face a unique conflict” during the Writers Guild Of America (WGA) strike, shared General Hospital writer Shannon Peace on Instagram. And she revealed that temporary writers will replace WGA members this month. “Starting next week, the show will be penned exclusively by scab writers, which is heartbreaking,” revealed Peace via Us magazine.

Starting in 2021, Shannon has worked as a writer on General Hospital. And she reflected on how “daytime writers face a unique conflict during strikes. We hate to see our characters and story lines handed over to ‘writers’ who cross the picket line,” she added on Instagram.

However, Pence shared that she feels “keenly aware that stopping production could spell the demise of soap operas.” And the writer revealed that the July 20 General Hospital episode marked her last one authored prior to the WGA strike beginning in May. As of July 25, full-time writers on General Hospital won’t control the plots.

GH Spoilers – Writers ‘Hope’ Fans Still Watch

However, Shannon didn’t urge viewers to stop watching General Hospital. And instead, the soap opera writer shared her hope that fans will support the show. “Starting Tuesday, the writing team of GH will be watching alongside fans to see what happens,” Pence wrote on social media.

And “for the sake of the fans, I hope the show is in capable writing hands,” she added. “But I have to also acknowledge the pain of knowing that characters we’ve developed, relationships we built and stories we planned are being handled by others. Still, my hope is that if you love GH, you’ll continue to watch. You can morally support the writers AND keep the show [on] the air! ??.”

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) consists of movie and TV writers. And their strike seeks to get the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to improve their contracts. As a result, General Hospital will continue by using non-WGA member writers who cross the picket lines.

But the WGA strike and the SAG-AFTRA picket lines have impacted other shows as well. However, HBO’s House of the Dragon continues to film because its stars belong to the U.K. union Equity. And When Calls the Heart, meanwhile, succeeded in getting a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement in July to shoot season 10 of the popular Hallmark Channel show.
