General Hospital spoilers tease Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) keeps saying she loves Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) — and we just don’t buy it. Sure, she seems heartbroken over his attack at Pentonville. She definitely doesn’t want him going back there. But not wanting someone dead and loving them as more than just a friend are two very different things.
Moreover, Carly isn’t uttering the things we would expect to hear her say, such as how much she loves him or she can’t lose him. Rather, she just keeps rinsing and repeating the same old lines about how awful she feels that Drew is in Pentonville because of her and Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard). Is she really in love with Drew, or is her guilty conscience convincing her she has to love him through this because it’s all her fault?
We’ve known Carly long enough now to know what it looks like when she’s truly in love with a man. This ain’t it. When Carly is in love, she’ll risk everything for the object of her affection. That’s not what she did when she let Drew take the fall for her.
Maybe she knows that and that’s the place her guilt is really stemming from. In the past, we’ve seen Carly really fall for two men — Sonny, and Jason Morgan (Steve Burton).
To be fair, most of Carly’s fans haven’t felt this alleged chemistry brewing between Carly and Drew from the very beginning. We barely made it through Carly’s detour in Jacksonville that brought the two of them together as more than friends.
Also, the most exciting part of the SEC scandal has been NIna Reeves (Cynthia Watros) hiding the truth about her role in it, and the angst of waiting for Sonny and Carly to find out.
No one is all that concerned with how Drew is going to feel about Nina’s move against him. Why? Because all of the chemistry is still really between Carly and Sonny — and the woman between them.
Ultimately, fans are expecting Carly to soon choose Sonny over Drew — even if she’s not opting into a CarSon reunion with the mobster.
Drew could end up with a commuted sentence or some other avenue toward keeping him safe that lets Carly off the hook from feeling so darned guilty. But it doesn’t sound like these two lovebirds are headed for the same wedded bliss that Sonny believes he is with Nina.
We don’t know what is going to happen yet, but it does seem like Carly will have to choose between her current love, and her ex — and she’ll be choosing the former.
