Stunned that Carly would lie to him — or to Willow — about something of this magnitude is going to change the entire landscape of their relationship. It’s hard to say if Drew will even consider himself a friend to Carly when all of this is said and done. He can’t trust her, and he’s not sure he wants to try to again.
Drew may not be able to forgive Carly. When he approached her and asked why she didn’t want him to find Willow’s birth parents, he had no idea what to expect from her response. Carly hasn’t been shouldering the burden of her secrets very well this whole time, and it didn’t take much prying for her to let it all out and tell Drew what she had done.
Maybe Carly has grown up just a smidge. Jason would have had to drag that out of her. Still, their relationship is definitely up in the air, and it won’t be a priority to Drew right now as they wait to hear whether or not Willow is going to pull through long enough to even receive a bone marrow donation.
Carly had to have known this truth could come out. Perhaps she didn’t when she first lied to Drew and told him the DNA test confirmed Nina and Willow were not a match, but since he began his search for Willow’s birth parents, she had to have worried that Willow would never give up the search. Was Carly seriously going to commit herself to thwart every attempt Willow ever put into place for the rest of her life?
She probably didn’t think that far ahead, but it’s safe to say Drew isn’t the kind of guy who would be okay with keeping this secret. Carly knew that; that’s why she lied to him in the first place. She didn’t want to tell the truth then, and she doesn’t want to now. Drew just might help her out with that, even though she doesn’t deserve it.
Drew and Carly’s relationship will never be the same after this. If Carly doesn’t come clean promptly, she may never redeem herself in his eyes enough to hang onto his friendship. On the other hand, she’s choosing between her boyfriend, and her son, daughter-in-law, and future grandchild. Drew might exempt Carly from having to air her dirty laundry just yet when he tells them he alone has found Willow’s birth mother — and it’s Nina!
The shock of this news, combined with Willow’s current crisis, will be enough to keep everyone’s minds off of how he figured it out. When Carly thanks him for cutting her some slack, he’s likely to make it very clear that he didn’t do this for Carly. Rather, the family is struggling enough right now. The only thing that matters is seeing to it that Willow gets better.
There is time to confess the truth and tear everyone’s world apart later. Right now, Nina and Willow need to know who they are to each other, and Nina needs to get tested as a bone marrow donor before another day passes. Nonetheless, Drew is looking out for the whole family, not Carly specifically, and he will make sure she knows that as he leaves her wondering if he will ever forgive her.
