General Hospital: A Tribute To Bobbie Spencer

Jacklyn Zeman, who portrayed Barbara Jean (Bobbie) Spencer on General Hospital, has died at 70 years old following a short battle with cancer.

“Just like her character, the legendary Bobbie Spencer, she was a bright light and true professional that brought so much positive energy with her to work,” GH executive producer Frank Valentini said in a statement on Twitter.

She is survived by her two children, Cassidy and Lacey. Fans will always remember Bobbie as a legacy character, and her incredible journey on General Hospital.

General Hospital Spoilers – The Early Days Of General Hospital’s Bobbie Spencer

Bobbie and her brother Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) lived with their Aunt Ruby Anderson who worked as a prostitute. Bobbie joined the profession to make ends meet.

She later became a nurse at General Hospital and the staff loved her.

Bobbie was in love with Scotty Baldwin (Kin Shriner), and although the two slept together, he was in love with Laura Webber (Genie Francis). The nurse enlisted the help of her brother Luke to help her break up the happy couple. Bobbie went so far as to fake a pregnancy. Her lie was exposed and Scotty married Laura.

Bobbie then fell in love with mobster Roy DeLuca but he was shot and died in her arms.

Her rivalry with Laura continued until Scotty’s wife fell for Luke and went on the run together. She was eventually a bridesmaid at Luke and Laura’s wedding.

GH Spoilers – Bobbie Spencer’s Love Life

One of Bobbie’s great love stories was with Dr. Noah Drake, played by 80s pop star Rick Springfield. The GH nurse was head over heels for the handsome doctor. Unfortunately, he didn’t want a commitment which he made clear. She was so obsessed with him that she pretended to be blind in order to keep him.

Bobbie Spencer married D.L. Brock, who was physically abusive toward her. When he was murdered, she was charged with the crime but was proven innocent.

Another one of Bobbie’s marriages was to attorney Jake Meyer. The couple tried unsuccessfully to adopt and eventually divorced.

It looked like happily ever after for Bobbie when she married her good friend Dr. Tony Jones, but that didn’t last. Bobbie’s affair with the evil Damian Smith, the death of their young daughter, and the arrival of a vindictive long-lost daughter tore them apart.

Bobbie rebounded to Stefan Cassadine, who she later realized was evil just like the rest of his family. Then she had a relationship with Jerry Jacks, and another with her former love Roy DiLucca, who was not so dead after all.

Things came full circle when she later rekindled her romance with Scotty Baldwin.

General Hospital Spoilers – The Heartbreaking Death Of B.J. Jones

One of the most memorable, and heartbreaking stories ever on General Hospital was the death of Bobbie and Tony Jones’ daughter B.J. Jones.

B.J. was in a school bus accident the same day that Tony caught Bobbie kissing Damian Smith in the General Hospital stairwell.

The little girl was brought to GH and did not survive. Her heart was donated to her cousin Maxie Jones, who was the daughter of Frisco and Felicia Jones.

Maxie was dying of a heart condition at the time and B.J.’s heart saved her life. The scenes of the parents dealing with the news were heart-wrenching. Bobbie and Maxie always maintained a close relationship because of B.J.’s heart.

GH Spoilers – The Introduction Of Carly Roberts On General Hospital

Shortly after B.J.’s death, a young woman named Carly Roberts appeared in Port Charles, and Bobbie and Tony befriended her.

Bobbie found Tony in bed with Carly on their wedding anniversary. This was the final nail in the coffin of the marriage and the couple divorced. Carly announced that she was pregnant with Tony’s baby but the father was really A.J. Quartermaine.

In true soap opera form, Bobbie found out that Carly was the baby she had given up years earlier when she was a pregnant teenager. Her long-lost daughter came to Port Charles to destroy her mother’s life as revenge for being given up for adoption.

As awful as the mother-daughter relationship began, it eventually mended. Carly and Bobbie bonded and became very close.

They were there to support each other during many trying times. Recently, Carly even decided to take her mother’s name and became Carly Spencer.

In one of Jacklyn Zeman’s final scenes as Barbara Jean Spencer, she and the Spencer women gathered around to celebrate Willow Tait’s wedding to Michael Corinthos. Bobbie, Carly, and daughter Josslyn Jacks all welcomed Willow into the circle of Spencers. It was a beautiful moment to remember both Jacklyn and Bobbie.
